Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is an independent, ever-evolving philanthropy that supports basic biomedical scientists and educators with the potential for transformative impact. We make long-term investments in people, not just projects, because we believe in the power of individuals to make breakthroughs over time. HHMI scientists have radically advanced the understanding of cells, the brain, the immune system, the development of organs, and how to treat many diseases.  Founded in 1953 by aviator and industrialist Howard R. Hughes, HHMI is headquartered in Chevy Chase, Maryland, and employs more than 2,500 people across the U.S.

We currently have an opening for a Research Specialist focused on CRISPR/Cas9 work in the lab of Dr. Phillip Newmark at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Morgridge Institute for Research.  Dr. Newmark’s lab seeks to understand how some animals can regenerate missing tissues.  Specifically, they study planarians, a kind of flatworm that can regenerate an entire body from fragmented parts – a process which relies on stem cells.  They investigate how stem cells are regulated to produce missing tissues.  Insights from their work on fundamental planarian biology led them to study schistosomes and tapeworms (types of parasitic flatworms), which rely on similar stem cells for their propagation.  Learning how parasitic flatworms infect their hosts and reproduce inside them could lead to new strategies for controlling these devastating parasites infecting hundreds of millions of people.
