Job Details
Physician Assistant opportunity in the Head & Neck Surgery Department. Ideal candidate will be a Physician Assistant with at least one year of surgery experience. Department will consider a new grad.
Practitioner
A. Patient Assessment
Provides quality patient care in relation to the patient's prescribed diagnosis, treatment, age group, development and other identified needs.
Evaluates health status by performing the history, physical and psychosocial assessment on initial and subsequent visits.
Makes daily rounds on each inpatient and reports findings and test results to attending physician.
Performs history and physical examinations, pre-operative assessments, and primary medical evaluations.
Reviews the findings of the history and physical, pertinent laboratory data, radiographic data, plan for further diagnosis and therapeutic management in collaboration with the attending physician.
B. Intervention/Evaluation
Evaluates and modifies plan of care as needed (under the supervision of M.D. if medical acts are required).
Provides psychological support to patients and families.
Provides health care throughout the disease process: diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, palliative and terminal care.
Facilitates use of agency resources.
Facilitates communication between patient/family and interdisciplinary team and coordinates services related to patient care.
Schedules consultations, diagnostic test or procedures, future appointments for patients in coordination with the attending physician.
C. Performance of diagnostic/therapeutic procedures
Undergoes training of specific medical procedures at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center by a physician.
Demonstrates competency of specific procedure under the direct supervision of a physician leading to certification to perform the procedure.
Participates in formal and informal instruction of nursing students, professional nurses and other health professionals.
Educator
Provides health education to the patient and his/her family (e.g., management of side effects, anticipatory teaching).
Participates in formal and informal instruction of nursing students, professional nurses and other health professionals.
Keeps self current by:
•Attending continuing education programs related to the clinical area.
•Reviewing literature related to clinical area.
•Participating in professional nursing organizations.
•Communicating advances in nursing practice or health care in general in writing through publication and presentation of scientific papers.
Researcher
Contributes to research efforts of department/section by:
•Identifying clinical problems amenable to research methods.
•Initiating or collaborating in research projects.
Applies pertinent research to clinical practice.
Consultant
Provides consultation to colleagues and allied personnel, making recommendation regarding treatment.
Collaborates with medical nursing and other disciplines regarding plan of care, discharge planning, follow-up and evaluation.
EDUCATION
Required: Graduate of a Physician Assistant training program approved by the Council of Medical Education of the American Medical Association.
Preferred: None
EXPERIENCE
Required: None
Preferred: A minimum one year of experience in a PA role. Surgical procedure experience strongly preferred.
LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION
Required: PA certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants. Licensed by the Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners.
MAY BE REQUIRED: Eligible to be granted limited prescriptive authority by the State of Texas.
