Assistant Professor - Pain Scientist

The Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto, invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position as a pain scientist. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor and will begin July 1, 2020 or shortly thereafter.

The Faculty of Dentistry is seeking a pain scientist whose research focus will enhance and strengthen the Faculty’s research profile, particularly in the area of Pain and Neuroscience, one of the Faculty of Dentistry’s areas of research strength and future growth. The candidate should bring novel approaches to both leverage and advance collaboration among existing research areas as well as with other Faculties and Departments within the University and affiliated hospitals. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program. Clinical application of their research is desirable.

The successful candidate must have a PhD in pain research or equivalent doctoral degree with a record of excellence in pain research and teaching. Post-doctoral experience of a minimum of one year in pain research is required. Evidence of excellence in research is required, as demonstrated by current grant support and publication in top-tier field-relevant academic journals, the research statement, contribution to the field, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong letters of reference from individuals of high standing.

The successful candidate will participate in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Evidence of teaching excellence will be demonstrated by the teaching dossier, including a teaching statement, sample course syllabi, teaching evaluations submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference.

The Faculty of Dentistry is the lead Faculty of the University of Toronto Centre for the Study of Pain, a multidisciplinary, multi-departmental, research and educational unit designed to foster research and scholarly interest in the area of pain. As such, the successful candidate will be expected to actively participate in its activities.
