Salary The starting salary will be from £35,845 up to £46,718 on Grade F, depending on qualifications and experience.

The College wishes to recruit a full time Postdoctoral Research Fellow to participate in a NERC-funded project that will improve understanding of how much carbon may be released to the atmosphere as permafrost soils thaw. As northern high latitudes warm, some of the billions of tonnes of carbon stored in frozen soils will be released to the atmosphere, accelerating future rates of climate change. This project will grow a high-latitude plant species in contrasting permafrost soils, and determine the fate of new carbon inputs from the plant. The aim is to determine the extent to which the formation of new soil organic matter from these plant inputs can offset carbon emissions from thawing permafrost. This NERC-funded post is available from 1st January 2020 to 31st July 2023.
The post's main roles will included
1. Establishing and maintaining plant-soil mesocosms.
2. Measuring the rates of soil CO2 release and its isotopic composition.
3. Completing isotopic analyses of different soil organic matter fractions.
4. Analysing large datasets.
5. Leading the presentation of findings at national and international conferences, and in leading academic journals
The successful applicant will be able to develop research objectives, projects and proposals; identify sources of research funding and contribute to the process of securing funds and make presentations at conferences and other events.
Applicants will possess a relevant PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in ecosystem science or biogeochemistry. The successful applicant will have a high level of expertise in terrestrial carbon cycling and possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research programmes and methodologies. The successful applicant will also be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required. Applicants will have strong understanding of the function of high-latitude or high-altitude ecosystems and be able measure carbon stores and fluxes.
