Associate or Full Professor in Virology

The Department of Biology in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites applications for a tenured appointment at the rank of associate or full professor beginning August 2020. Rank will be dependent on experience and stature in the field. Depending on qualifications, the appointee to this position may be recommended for tenure at the time of hiring.

The ideal candidate for this position is a collaborative Ph.D. scientist with an established, externally-funded research program in viral pathogenesis, virus-host interactions, immune responses to infection, plant pathology, or related areas of virology. This individual will be capable of complementing the biology department’s strengths in microbiology, molecular biology, cell biology, neuroscience, evolution, physiology, genetics and genomics. Scientists who use biochemical approaches, mathematical modeling, or study environmental causes of viral outbreaks, and who are capable of establishing synergies with other science departments in the College of Arts and Sciences are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants must have demonstrated effective teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Candidates with experience working with, teaching or mentoring a diverse student body, and those able to contribute to and foster diversity and inclusion efforts on campus and with respect to the biology curriculum are preferred. Responsibilities will consist of maintaining a vigorous and internationally visible research program, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, recruiting graduate students, and participating in department, college, and university service activities. The successful candidate will occupy lab space in the university’s new Hall of Science, a state-of-the-art facility opening summer 2020 that will house the Departments of Biology, Environmental Science, Chemistry, and the Neuroscience Program.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Best consideration will be given to applications received by November 25, 2019. Please submit applications via: http://apply.interfolio.com/67764 . Include a letter of application, curriculum vitae, and a list of three professional references. Please contact Dr. Jeffrey Kaplan at kaplanjb@american.edu  if you have any questions.
