The Opportunity

The Department of Chemistry and Biology in the Faculty of Science at Ryerson University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Analytical Chemistry with interests in consumables materials (such as food and nutraceuticals), environmental science, or the analysis of biological materials. The appointment shall be effective July 1, 2020, subject to final budgetary approval.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will engage in a combination of teaching, research and service duties, maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across all activities. Specifically, the candidate is expected to develop an innovative, independent, externally funded, and sustainable research program in the area of Analytical Chemistry. The candidate will contribute to our undergraduate (B.Sc.) and graduate programs (M.Sc./M.A.Sc./Ph.D.) through mentoring and supervision of trainees, and is expected to teach analytical chemistry courses. The candidate’s contributions in all areas of activity will reflect and support the Department’s inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment.

Qualifications 

Candidates must hold an earned Ph.D. in Chemistry and post-doctoral research experience or equivalent in Analytical Chemistry. 

In addition, the successful candidate must present evidence of: 

  • a record of scholarly research, creative activities and any other contributions that demonstrate their ability and potential for developing an innovative, independent, externally funded and sustainable research program in the area of Analytical Chemistry. Contributions may be, but are not limited to, peer reviewed publications, working papers, book chapters, policy documents, evidence of outreach and public engagement, presentations to the scientific community or other venues for knowledge dissemination; 
  • teaching excellence or the potential for teaching excellence through a statement of teaching philosophy and, if available, descriptions of teaching accomplishments, which could include examples of course/curriculum review/development, skills development in pedagogical practice, sample syllabi and teaching evaluations; 
  • strong communication skills and the ability to work with diverse communities of trainees;
  • a commitment to our values of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) as it pertains to service, teaching, and scholarly research or creative activities, including an understanding (either demonstrated or planned) to create an inclusive and accessible learning environment for a diverse student population. Evidence of commitment to EDI should be provided in the form a diversity statement that demonstrates an understanding of EDI principles and evidence of application of those EDI principles, or clearly defined plans of how they would apply those principles in their research programs and teaching responsibilities; and
  • an ability to contribute to the life of the Department. Faculty and the University through collegial service.

The Department of Chemistry and Biology consists of 37 tenure-stream faculty members. The Department offers three undergraduate programs in Biomedical Sciences, Biology, and Chemistry, and graduate programs at the Master’s and Doctoral levels in Molecular Science and Environmental Applied Science and Management.

  • a teaching dossier or philosophy;
  • a 1-page statement of EDI philosophy;

  • a 5-page research proposal in the field of Analytical Chemistry; and
