Inaugural Chair for Concentration in Science,

Technology and International Affairs (non-tenure line)

The Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service (SFS) at Georgetown University invites applications for a three-year, non-tenure-line faculty position as the inaugural Chair for the Concentration in Science, Technology and International Affairs (STIA) in the Masters of Science in Foreign Service (MSFS) program. This is an opportunity for a person of vision to shape the direction of the next generation of world leaders at a time when science and technology have never been more fundamental to international affairs.

The successful candidate will work with the directors of the MSFS and the STIA Programs to design and manage a new graduate-level concentration (18 credits) for the MSFS program. This addition will complement existing concentrations in Global Politics and Security, International Development, and Global Business and Finance. In addition, the successful candidate will work collaboratively to build curriculum, mentoring and co-curricular program linkages between the MSFS program and the School’s well-established undergraduate STIA Program.

S/he will be responsible for overseeing the strategic planning and development of the new MSFS Concentration and its curriculum, leading and teaching innovative gateway courses for both the undergraduate STIA major (fall and spring) and the graduate concentration (spring), and serving as an academic and career advisor, primarily to graduate students in the concentration. The Chair will report directly to both the MSFS and STIA Program Directors and serve as a member of the MSFS program Leadership Team, the MSFS Curriculum Committee, and the STIA core faculty.

This position requires working collaboratively with other faculty and staff across multiple units and programs within SFS and in other Georgetown schools and departments, the ability to work independently and in teams and to lead teams effectively, and the flexibility to make adjustments as program needs evolve. Reappointment will be determined in accordance with the Framework for Full Time Non-Tenure Line Instructional Faculty. For more information, visit: http://stia.georgetown.edu and http://msfs.georgetown.edu .
An ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in science or technology; a passion for educating a generation of scientifically aware international leaders; show promise for developing and delivering an innovative curriculum; have experience teaching in a practical, student-centered program to fulfill the mission; and have practical experience and connections in the public and/or private sectors relating science and technology to pressing issues of international concern. Faculty rank in the professor of the practice career track will be determined by qualifications.

Applicants should provide a cover letter, curriculum vitae and recent teaching evaluations (if available). Initial candidates selected for further consideration will be asked to provide 3 letters of reference and additional materials.

The start date for this three-year position is no later than August 1, 2020. This position is renewable depending on performance and need.  Applications for this position must be made via Georgetown’s online application management system at https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/15134. Faxed, mailed or emailed applications will not be accepted. Review of applications will begin on December 1, 2019 and continue until the position is filled.
