Job Details

The Sr. Research Scientist will apply technical expertise and experience to plan, coordinate, design, and carry out research projects that integrate metabolomics and proteomics into the discovery of networks and pathways and targets for cancer diagnostics and therapeutics that impact cancer research efforts throughout the institution. Responsible for specific activities related to the application of metabolomics and proteomics technologies to cancer research and for completion of other tasks and activities as assigned by principal investigator and scientific managers.

WORK ACTIVITIES

Research Design, Planning, Coordination & Evaluation:

* Plans, organizes, coordinates and participates in metabolomics and proteomics research projects.

* Experienced in operating and troubleshooting various cutting edge LC-MS instrumentations.

* Reviews and evaluates research activity of mass spectrometry team. Works with the scientific managers closely to determine specific goals and requirements of each run.

* Plays a collaborative role in project management including scheduling, prioritizing, data and report generating to ensure the progress of projects.

* Under the supervision of scientific managers, processes clinical and pre-clinical samples for LC-MS based analyses following SOPs; operates mass spectrometry and analytical liquid chromatograph independently to produce results on assigned research projects. Presents findings to supervisors and professional groups. Prepares scientific documents as requested for publications. Assists in progress report writing and technical presentations.

* Serves on project teams, implements research protocols, and oversees data management and analysis procedures.

* Maintains LC-MS instruments, identifies potential problems, and suggests preventative measures to ensure efficient use of all instrumentation.

2. Communication and Team Work:

* Plays a collaborative role and interacts with, and provides input to investigators in the McCombs Institute and Moon Shots programs in a timely and interactive fashion.

* Communicates effectively with supervisor, collaborators, and co-workers on scientific and other challenging issues pertaining to the work.

Working Conditions

Must be able to work evenings, weekends, as needed. Requires the ability to adapt to changing conditions in situations and priorities that may be characterized by high stress levels, such as project deadlines. Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision, budget and prioritize time and workload, address spontaneous issues and problems, resolve conflicts, and make decisions. The position also requires one to anticipate needs, to recognize situations requiring assistance and have the ability to refer or perform any necessary tasks, and to comprehend the goals of the program and take the initiative in making decisions and taking actions to further these goals.

EDUCATION:
Required: Ph.D. in one of the natural sciences or related field or Medical degree.

EXPERIENCE:
Required: Three years of experience in experimental or scientific work.

Preferred: Experience in a pharmaceutical, environmental, or healthcare regulated environment (CLIA, GLP, or GMP). Experience with metabolomics and proteomics
