The Applied Physics Program is seeking to fill a tenure track position, at the rank of Assistant Professor, with a Physicist to teach introductory, intermediate, and advanced physics courses, and develop a research program which will include undergraduate students.  The position will start in September 2020. Preference will be given to experimental physicists who have a demonstrated past experience actively performing experimental physics research. Physicists who have actively completed research in theoretical physics, computational physics, or physics education will be considered. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to teaching in the Physics program, as well as in the interdisciplinary General Studies curriculum.  Additionally, a commitment to university service and continuing research activity is required.

Responsibilities:

  • Teaching load is 12 hours each semester and typically consists of lecture and lab sections.
  • Teach service-related introductory courses: Physics I and II, Physics for the Life Sciences I and II, Physics Lab I and II, and Physics for Life Sciences Lab I and II.
  • Contribute to the core Physics curriculum by teaching core course (e.g. Physics III, Modern Physics, Electricity and Magnetism, Electrical Circuits, Mathematical Physics for Engineers and Scientists, Mathematical Physics, Electronics, Optics, Introduction to Quantum Mechanics).
  • Develop a research program involving undergraduate students. Continue and enhance current research in Acoustics, Medical Physics, Atmospheric Physics, Astronomy, Computational Physics, and/or develop a new research program in other areas of physics which will involve undergraduate students.
  • Contribute to the interdisciplinary general studies curriculum.
  • Excellence in teaching and scholarship is expected.
  • Serve as an advisor (preceptor) to undergraduate students.
  • Participate in service to the University, community and profession.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Physics or related field

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to incorporate computational techniques, and computational packages, in teaching of undergraduates (Maple, MatLab, etc.)
  • Experience in operating Atomic Force Microscope.
  • Ability to complement upper level physics classes with additional upper level courses.
