The Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology, Virginia Commonwealth University, seeks a Lab Specialist Senior. Our laboratory studies the abnormal post-transcriptional gene regulation, perturbed metabolism as well as oncogenic signaling cascades associated with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and how they can be exploited for targeted therapy (Kapadia, Nature Communications 2018; Bhalla, Scientific Reports 2018; Dai; Oncogene 2016). Duties for this position include assisting the Principal Investigator (PI) in conducting novel translational research with the ultimate goal of developing new treatments for cancer, training new employees, rotating graduate/medical students and high school students on procedures and protocols to share institutional knowledge. Maintaining and managing mouse colony using laboratory techniques to generate data for publications in peer-reviewed journals and completion of studies proposed in grant applications. Performing experiments utilizing lab techniques including, but not limited to: isolation of proteins, DNA and RNA, electrophoresis, radioactive kinase assay, DNA damage assay, and flow cytometry to generate data for publications in peer-reviewed journals and completion of studies proposed in grant applications. Compiling data in an orderly and easily retrievable fashion with the goal of publication. Maintaining cell lines to ensure sterility, purity of line, and long-term storage in liquid N2. Ordering supplies and maintaining a stock of lab consumables to ensure research experiments are done in a timely, efficient fashion. Keeping all purchasing, isotope, biohazard, and other records to ensure compliance with University policies.

Minimum Qualifications: Understanding of basic scientific principles is essential, ability to collect and organize data obtained in an accurate and reliable way, the individual should have several years of experience performing the molecular and biochemical studies that are routinely carried out in this laboratory, experience in mouse husbandry, and be able to work in an independent manner. The individual should ideally have prior experience with sterile tissue culture technique and familiarity with basic biochemical methods (i.e., DNA separation) as well as molecular biologic techniques (i.e., Northern and Western Analysis, transfections). Ability to work in a diverse environment is required.

Preferred Qualifications: M.S. or higher, in a biological or biomedical field. Basic understanding/familiarity with biochemical and molecular biological principles and techniques is preferred.
