Position Summary

A Research Associate II position is available immediately in the laboratory of Dr. David Ann, Ph.D. at Beckman Research Institute of City of Hope.




About the Ann Laboratory

Funded by NIH continually, Dr. Ann's lab is interested in the role of post-translational modifications, such as autophagy, phosphorylation, acetylation, SUMOylation, O-GlcNAcylation and ubiquitination in human metabolic disorders, including cancers and diabetes/obesity, with a particular focus on diet-induced metabolic reprogramming and rewiring. Ann lab's work aims to develop the pathogenic link among diet, aberrant metabolism and cancer progression. These studies will provide mechanistic insights that lead to not only effective dietary advice to lower cancer risk, but also development of novel diet-targeting therapies for cancer treatment and prevention.




Key Responsibilities include:
  • Performs a variety of routine and non-routine laboratory research experiments. Records and validates results for accuracy and completeness.
  • Troubleshoots procedures if experiment results are unexpected or unsatisfactory. Recommends alternative procedures.
  • Responsible for accurately recording work performed including results and methodology. Calculates, compiles and analyzes data obtained from work performed.
  • Independently evaluates research data and initiates alternative approaches to improve the quality of results by providing input to overall research design. Trains lab staff in specialized procedures, equipment and theoretical concepts behind unique tests.
  • May contribute to the preparation of manuscripts by describing methods and specialized techniques. Keeps abreast of new and improved techniques.
  • Assist with mouse survival surgery, tissue recovery and maintenance of mouse colonies in accordance with the approved IACUC protocol.
  • Proficient in cell and molecular biological techniques, including cell metabolism research, primary cell culture, flow cytometry, IHC, RNAseq and real-time PCR.
  • Keeps abreast of new and improved methodologies and technologies.
  • Ensures that all laboratory activities are carried out in compliance with each procedure(s) by utilizing safety procedures and guidelines in handling, storage and disposal of bio-hazardous, infectious and toxic material.
  • Performs other research-related duties as assigned or requested by PI.


Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:
  • Must have a bachelor's degree and two years research/laboratory experience or one year research/laboratory experience with a Master's degree.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with other lab members.
  • Ability to design and execute experiments, interpret experimental results, and present data effectively.
  • Have sound technical skills and working ethics.


Preferred education, experience and skills:
  • Master's degree.
