Reporting to the Director of the Shared Facilities, the SMCL Director will: maintain, develop, and administer the Shared Materials Characterization Laboratory; Responsible for all aspects of the administration of the SMCL facilities, including safety, budget, and periodic maintenance and troubleshooting/repair of equipment. The staff associate/senior staff associate submits purchase requests, maintains all necessary computer infrastructure for the SMCL facility such as workstations, routers, printers, data servers, and software for the SMCL instruments, supervises and guides lab assistants (“superusers”); If required, the SMCL Director may assist in other CNI shared facility labs as well.
Serves as an expert advisor in the field of X-ray diffraction, magnetometry, microscopy, spectroscopy, and thermal analysis of materials. He will independently choose appropriate experiments, designing protocols, carrying out experiments, and analyzing data to assist with users’ research. He will keep current on the materials characterization literature and independently brings new, appropriate materials techniques and software into the facility. He will develop new techniques or modify or implement published techniques.
Responsible for improving scientific capabilities of the facility he will assist with the installation of new instrumentation. In consultation with faculty and the director of shared facility, assesses the facility’s need for new equipment. Assists with preparation and submission of grant proposals to funding agencies. Responsible for training users on characterization techniques and data interpretation. Establishes training procedures including demonstrations and written user guides and SOPs.
Responsible in conjunction with the Director of Shared Facility Laboratories, for the facility safety procedures, budget, supplies, and usage billing.
