The Genome Biology Unit is looking for outstanding candidates with exciting research questions and a proven track record in genomics and genomics technology development.  Applicants from any area of genome biology that dissects and/or models complex processes will be considered.  We particularly encourage candidates developing innovative technologies in the field of genome regulation (transcription, translation, protein activity), genome engineering, proteomics, genotype-phenotype-environment interactions, single-cell and single molecule biology.

The Genome Biology Unit studies the molecular mechanisms by which genetic information is expressed and regulated in diverse biological systems.  We combine cutting edge approaches to dissect and model complex processes translating genotypes to phenotypes.  The department hosts 10 independent interdisciplinary research groups, working on synergistic topics, creating a vibrant and interactive environment.  EMBL is ranked among the top research institutes world-wide, with a reputation for conducting cutting-edge research with a highly collaborative, open, and supportive culture and a lively international community.

The offer includes a very competitive yearly research package, access to state-of-the-art core facilities, core-funded Ph.D. students from an excellent international Ph.D. program, and a post-doc recruitment program  – key features to support a successful research group.

Your role

You will lead an independent research group to pursue exciting and original research in the broad domain of Genome Biology with a strong emphasis on the development of enabling technologies that will push genomics forward.  EMBL generally appoints group leaders early in their career and provides a very supportive, collegial and family friendly environment in which to develop exciting, cutting-edge research.  Significant yearly core funding for the entire stay up to 9 years and very limited teaching obligations allow you to undertake an ambitious, farsighted research program.

You have

You should have an outstanding Ph.D. and post-doctoral record, an exciting, original and ambitious interdisciplinary research plan for your future group, and are strongly motivated to collaborate with surrounding colleagues.

Why join us

EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organization with a very collegial and family friendly working environment.  EMBL is committed to achieving gender balance and strongly encourages applications from women.  Appointment will be based on merit alone.  The remuneration package comprises a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme, medical, educational and other social benefits, as well as financial support for relocation and installation, including your family, and the availability of an excellent child care facility on campus.

What else you need to know

We are Europe’s flagship research laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation performing scientific research in disciplines including molecular biology, physics, chemistry and computer science. We are an international, innovative and interdisciplinary laboratory with more than 1700 employees from many nations, operating across six sites, in Heidelberg (HQ), Barcelona, Hinxton near Cambridge, Hamburg, Grenoble and Rome.

Our other missions are to offer vital services in training scientists, students and visitors at all levels; to develop new instruments and technologies in the life sciences and actively engage in technology transfer activities, and to integrate European life science research.

The working language of the institute is English.

In your online application, you will be asked to include a cover letter, your CV, the names and contact details of 3 referees and a concise description of research interests & future research plans, typically not exceeding five pages.

Further information about research in the Genome Biology Unit and at EMBL can be found at the EMBL web page. Information on Group Leader appointments can be found under http://www.embl.org/gl_faq.

Interviews will be held on December 16th-17th 2019.
