The Natural History Museum (NHM) is a world-class science research centre and cultural institution. Our London and Tring museums care for the world’s most scientifically important natural history collection, which comprises more than 80 million specimens. We welcome more than five million visitors annually – and many millions more digitally. We use our unique assets and unrivalled expertise to address some of the greatest challenges facing society and the natural world, including climate change, biodiversity loss, food security, disease eradication, the management of natural resources, and the health of our oceans. Our work is more relevant than ever as a result of human impact on the planet. Through sharing our knowledge and scientific research with diverse global audiences, we will create advocates for the planet: citizens who feel sufficiently informed, confident and motivated to take wise decisions, to get involved, and to use their influence to make a positive difference.

We are now seeking an exceptional individual to succeed our current Director, Sir Michael Dixon, who will retire at the end of March 2021. As Director, you will provide inspirational and strategic leadership at this exciting time in the Museum’s history as we head towards our 150th anniversary in 2031. The Director represents the Museum across the globe with government, educational and scientific organisations, and takes the lead in developing the philanthropic and corporate support which will be essential to the Museum’s future. Given the Museum’s position as a leading centre of excellence and authority on the natural world and environmental change, you will also contribute regularly and meaningfully to relevant national and international debate.

To succeed in this high-profile role, you must demonstrate a clear affinity with the Museum’s mission along with a strong and sustained track record of senior leadership and management in organisations of comparable scale and complexity. You will have the personal presence, authority and credibility to be the ‘face and voice’ of the Museum and to build effective relationships with a wide range of local, national and international audiences, either directly or via a range of broadcast and social media.

This is a rare opportunity to lead one of the UK’s most significant museums. For further information and details of how to apply, please visit www.odgers.com/73139

Applications are invited by close of business on Friday 8 November 2019.

As an equal opportunities employer, we welcome applications from everyone. Diversity, inclusion and the feeling of belonging matter to us. By attracting people to work for us from a broad range of diverse backgrounds we can continue to look at the world with fresh eyes and find new ways of doing things. We champion diversity, encourage creativity, we are connected, and we value evidence.
