As the chief academic, fiscal, and administrative officer of the School, the Head will be a role model for scholarship and academic excellence and will provide leadership, advocacy, oversight, and management. The Head will also work with the leadership team in the College of Science to cultivate prospective donors and research partners.

Offering BS degrees in Biochemistry and Chemistry, and MS programs in Chemistry, and in Materials Science and Engineering, SCMS is a comprehensive research and education entity with a primary focus on undergraduate education. There are approximately 125 undergraduate students, 52 graduate students, and 26 students who are currently on a BS/MS degree track (their MS degree being housed in SCMS), but who have not entered the graduate level of their degree yet. The Materials Science & Engineering program is an interdisciplinary graduate program of the College of Science and the Kate Gleason College of Engineering at RIT. In addition to the degree programs, SCMS provides the required Chemistry courses needed to support all other academic programs at RIT.

SCMS is committed to elevating its position and profile as a world-class research enterprise, and educating high caliber scientists and engineers in Chemistry, Biochemistry and Materials Science. The Head will guide hiring of new faculty, lead the School in implementing a dynamic strategic plan for education and research, and play a crucial role in shaping the direction of the College of Science.
