The department for "Mitochondrial Proteostasis"

headed by director Prof. Dr. Thomas Langer

is looking for a full time

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Biochemistry (m/f/d)

(Job code 20-2019)

The Langer department for “Mitochondrial Proteostasis” seeks to define molecular mechanisms that preserve mitochondrial function with age and allow the dynamic adaptation of the mitochondrial proteome in a cell- and tissue-specific manner. Projects focus on the function of mitochondrial proteases and membrane lipids that are emerging as central regulators and orchestrate complex interactions of mitochondria with their cellular environment.

We seek a highly motivated and talented scientist to join the research team dealing with structural-functional study of scaffolding protein complexes (Prohibitins, SLP-2) and nanoscale membrane domains in the mitochondrial inner membrane. The research project is governed in the frame of FOR 2848 "Nanoscale Architecture and Heterogeneity of the Mitochondrial Inner Membrane" funded by DFG.

Qualifications

The successful applicant will hold a Ph.D. in a relevant research area such as molecular biology, genetics, or biochemistry and has a strong record of accomplishment. Prior experience with biochemistry and/or structural biology as well as with cell biology using cultured cell lines would be preferred, but are not required. The applicant should have a keen interest in the biology of ageing, and excellent written and oral communication skills. The working language is English; knowledge of the German language is not required.

Research Environment

The Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing (MPI-AGE), Cologne, was founded in 2008 with the aim to understand fundamental mechanisms of healthy ageing in various model systems. The institute is part of a broad network of research institutions in the Cologne-Bonn area dedicated to research on ageing and age-related disease, constituting a vibrant and collaborative environment with state of the art facilities for research. Currently we host >270 employees from >30 different nations.

The employment contract will be based on contracts for the civil service (TVöD-Bund, Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst) and will initially be time limited. The Max Planck Society is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals. Furthermore, the Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply.
