Position Summary
The Thurmond Lab specializing in cellular and molecular aspects underlying metabolic regulation and Diabetes seeks a Research Associate II to assist with experimental data collection and analysis, and to carry out general laboratory management.
Key Responsibilities:
- Under the supervision of the principal investigator, the candidate will be responsible for performing experimentation such as immunocytochemistry, western blots, PCR genotyping, cell culture, mouse handling, and management of animal colonies.
- Troubleshoots procedures if experiment results are unexpected or unsatisfactory. Recommends alternative procedures.
- Responsible for accurately recording work performed including results and methodology. Calculates, compiles and analyzes data obtained from work performed.
- Independently evaluates research data and initiates alternative approaches to improve the quality of results by providing input to overall research design. Trains lab staff in specialized procedures, equipment and theoretical concepts behind unique tests.
- May contribute to the preparation of manuscripts by describing methods and specialized techniques. Keeps abreast of new and improved techniques.
- Ensures that all laboratory activities are carried out in compliance with each procedure(s) by utilizing safety procedures and guidelines in handling, storage and disposal of bio-hazardous, infectious and toxic material.
Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:
- Bachelor's degree, plus two years of post-degree experience; or Master's degree, plus one year of post-degree experience.
- Biological or chemical sciences background, preferred.
- Candidates must have solid background and knowledge of basic laboratory skills, high level of self-sufficiency and independence, and willingness to work in a team-oriented manner.
- Meticulous work habits, dependability and excellent communication skills are required.
- Prior experience handling rodents is preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills.
