FACULTY POSITION for Full Professor (Tenured) and Center Director

The University of California, Riverside's (UCR) Marlan and Rosemary Bourns College of Engineering (BCOE) invites applicants for a tenured Full Professor position who will serve as the Director of the BCOE Winston Chung Global Energy Center (WCGEC), will complement the highly motivated and entrepreneurial spirit of the College faculty, and will contribute meaningfully to the success of future teaching, research, and service accomplishments. The incumbent is expected to initiate and sustain a strong sponsored research and graduate training program.

WCGEC is a multi-disciplinary research center focusing on the broad area of energy and sustainability. It was established in January 2011 by a $10 million cash donation by Winston Chung, a Chinese battery technology scientist, inventor, and entrepreneur. The gift was later augmented with an additional $5 million in in-kind support to help establish a Sustainable Integrated Grid Initiative (SIGI) at UCR to demonstrate “smart integration” of battery technologies, renewable energy, and advanced dispatch controls through field implementations. The center currently administers over $7 million in extramural research grants, with the potential of doubling in the next few years.

The research activities at WCGEC are currently divided into two broad categories: Energy Devices and Materials (Area 1); and, Energy and Power Systems (Area 2). The successful candidate will be an outstanding senior faculty member or an industry leader with a proven record of vibrant externally-funded research in Area 1, focusing on related topics such as advanced and scalable battery technologies, fuel cells, super capacitors, solar cells, solar thermal. The successful candidate will also demonstrate clear potential to lead the overall integrated multidisciplinary research efforts within the center across Area 1 and Area 2, in partnership with the related BCOE departments and programs: Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Material Science and Engineering, and Chemical and Environmental Engineering.

Advancement through the faculty ranks at the University of California is through a series of structured, merit-based evaluations, occurring every 2-3 years, each of which includes substantial peer input.

UCR is a world-class research university with an exceptionally diverse undergraduate student body. Its mission is explicitly linked to providing routes to educational success for underrepresented and first-generation college students. A commitment to this mission is a preferred qualification.
