Director, Office of Postdoctoral Affairs

This position provides leadership and supervision for all aspects of program development and delivery for UIC Office of Postdoctoral Affairs. This includes the design, implementation and management of programs to recruit high quality post docs, enhance retention and provide support of postdoctoral scholars. The Director oversees all administrative aspects of postdoctoral community affairs, including furthering the development of the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, establishing and maintaining communications with postdoctoral fellows in order to promote research collaborations, etc., providing career and professional development resources for postdoctoral fellows, including the planning of events focused on career and professional development, communicating information about career opportunities, developing and overseeing programs and events, as well as serving as an advocate for postdoc issues with faculty and administration. 

Responsibilities include:

• Provide leadership, strategic vision, and management of short-and long- term operations and goals

• Provide resources for faculty to assist in the recruitment and retention of high quality postdoctoral fellows

• Work with Scientific and Administrative leadership in development of strategic plans, budgets (work unit and programmatic) and process improvements

• Oversee the development and administration of programs and services for postdoctoral scholars. Services include orientation, onboarding programs, career advising, job search and interviewing resources, career development workshops, professional seminars, leadership in the responsible conduct of research (RCR) program and other offerings promoting the welfare and advancement of the postdoctoral population

• Manage daily operations to ensure delivery of timely and effective services to postdocs; tracks employment trends and interacts with administrators, deans, department heads, faculty and external employers who hire postdocs

• Administer membership in the National Postdoc Association; maintain website content; create partnerships with offices and resources on campus

• Establish and maintain communications with postdoctoral fellows to develop a functional community in order to promote research collaborations

• Partner with other directors to collaborate on program delivery, marketing, web presence, registration system, etc.

• Serve as advisor to the local postdoc association; collaborate with postdoc association to plan and execute annual Postdoctoral Research Symposium and research talks during Postdoctoral Appreciation Week

• Provide guidance to the postdoc association on programming and administration

• Write and submit grant proposals to obtain funds to enhance the postdoc office

• Assist campus on classification, policy and procedure concerns related to postdocs

• Update departmental personnel representatives on rules and regulations applicable to postdoc appointments

• Represent the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research on departmental and university committees

• Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned

Qualifications:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: A PhD required in Science, Engineering or related field preferred. Three years of professional experience in an academic setting. Experience with oversight of, or participation in, postdoctoral training at a research university. Experience working with international trainees. Experience with career advising and professional development program delivery required. Project management experience in implementing and delivering graduate or post-graduate educational programs. Training Grant experience and previous grant experience preferred. Knowledge of federal granting agencies and their procedures. Working knowledge and understanding of finance, budgeting, planning and human resource development.
