Staff Scientist

With nation-wide responsibility for improving the health and well being of all Americans, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) oversees the biomedical research programs of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and those of NIH's research Institutes.

The Laboratory of Molecular Signaling (LMS) in the Intramural Research Program (IRP) of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), NIH is recruiting a Staff Scientist. The LMS investigates molecular and signaling mechanisms in neurodevelopment and neuroprotection leading to a potential link to neurodegenerative conditions and/or a therapeutic strategy for central nervous system (CNS) injury in adulthood. LMS has recently discovered a novel G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling mechanism that mediates neurogenesis, neurite growth and synaptogenesis and have successfully demonstrated that reactivating this developmental mechanism is an effective strategy for neuroprotection. For further information on our research, please visit the web site (http://irp.nih.gov/pi/hee-kim). The Staff Scientist will participate in the multi-disciplinary research by designing and performing neuroscience experiments. The incumbent will lead and oversee the day-to-day operation of the neuroscience aspects of the project, and train and mentor pre- and postdoctoral fellows.

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. or M.D. degree in Neurobiology/Neuroscience or related field. The incumbent must possess a profound knowledge of the technological aspects of performing neuroscience research with proven experience and skills in primary neural cell culture, modern molecular biology and microscopic imaging techniques with proficiency in appropriate software. Additionally, experience in managing mouse clones and performing in vivo studies in rodent models of CNS injury would be desirable.

Applicants may be U.S. citizens, resident aliens, or non-resident aliens with, or eligible to obtain a valid employment-authorization visa. The successful candidate will be eligible for a full Federal benefits package, including leave, health and life insurance, retirement, and savings plan (401K equivalent).

All applications should include the following: a cover letter, a current curriculum vitae and bibliography; a brief summary of research interests, and two letters of reference. Application materials should be sent to arrive no later than November 30, 2019 to:
