Assistant Professor – Computational Neuroscience/Neuroimaging

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Department of Biological Sciences at The University of Texas at El Paso invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in neuroscience with two potential areas of focus:  computational neuroscience or neuroimaging.  The anticipated appointment date is Fall 2020. The successful candidate is expected to establish an extramurally funded research program, to teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, and to participate in departmental service. Outstanding qualified applicants in all areas of computational neuroscience and/or neuroimaging in animal models are strongly encouraged to apply, but special consideration will be given to candidates who utilize neural data science approaches for neuroscience in their research (behavioral data analyses for animal models; neuroinformatics, natural language processing, deep learning, knowledge engineering; network analyses of connectomic datasets; and/or data fitting to theoretical models of neural function). Teaching experience is preferred, but not required.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Biological Sciences offers two Ph.D. tracks (Bioscience and Ecology/Evolution) and has faculty that contribute to the NIH-funded Border Biomedical Research Center, which offers unique resources and grant opportunities for its investigators. The department boasts multiple state-of-the-art core facilities with full-time staff and BSL3/ABSL3 facilities. The core facilities include those focused on mass spectrometry, genomics, tissue culture and high-throughput drug screening, confocal microscopy, bioinformatics and biostatistics. Neuroscience faculty maintain strong collaborative and programmatic ties with several other departments, including Psychology, Pharmacy, Kinesiology, Physics, Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering and Computer Science. We anticipate the opening of our new Interdisciplinary Research Building in 2020 with a modern animal care facility and a proposed small-animal imaging core that will further enhance research opportunities. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree, postdoctoral research experience, and an exemplary record of research accomplishments.
