Post-doctoral scientist - Lund University, Sweden

The multidisciplinary and well-funded Riesbeck Research Group in the Department of Translational Medicine, Faculty of Medicine at Lund University is recruiting postdoctoral fellows with appropriate training and publication-documented expertise to work on infection biology of human airway, gastric and other mucosal pathogens (Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, and Helicobacter pylori etc.).

Research projects

The successful candidates will work on one of the following funded projects (two projects) according to their scientific research interest, knowledge and skills. The first project aims to elucidate molecular mechanisms behind the biogenesis of outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) and protein translocation from bacterial surface into OMVs (cargo sorting), that are currently poorly understood. The second research project will focus on the molecular biology, and gene expression and regulation involved in bacteria global physiological responses responsible for virulence homeostasis and interaction with host in the context of translational transcriptomic during infection.

Postdoctoral training

The collaborative projects will offer an excellent opportunity for training in a wide-range of advanced methods and technologies. This includes CRISPR-based genome editing, flow cytometry, various molecular techniques for gene cloning, and recombinant and native protein production and purification, host-pathogen interaction study by using animal and in vitro cell models (cell lines and primary cells), microscopy analysis (fluorescence, confocal), and up-to-date in silico analysis, and protein-protein interaction (kinetics) by Bio-Layer interferometry. In addition, candidates will also participate in high standard scientific communication/ meeting presenting their work, and in collaboration with prestigious scientists, academics partners, and clinical personnel. Riesbeck Research Group offers a collaborative multi-disciplinary environment and great educational platform for the study microbial membrane biology and infection physiology of human airway pathogens. Importantly, the successful candidate will work closely with the PI in a collaborative research setting to develop the project and support the candidates to achieve their career goals.

Successful applicant requirements

Applicants should have a PhD in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related field, and must have completed their PhD by the start of the appointment and within the last 3 years. Experience in microbiology research, protein expression and analysis, flow cytometry, microscopy, statistical analysis, molecular and cell biology, bioinformatics and immunology would be particularly valuable. Successful candidates must also possess excellent scientific writing ability, have strong organization and communication skills in English, the ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues/ work in a team, highly self-motivated, strong work ethics, independent and innovative.

An application by enthusiastic and motivated applicants must contain the following documents;

  • Curriculum vitae including date of thesis defense, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete publication list
  • Brief statement of research experience and interests
  • Contact information of three references (name, telephone number and e-mail)

The application should be sent by email to Prof. Kristian Riesbeck ( at the latest Novemer 30th, 2019. Starting date is flexible and the position is funded for 2 years with possibility of recruitment extension, depending on satisfactory performance and availability of funds. The tax-free scholarship is 2300 euro/month including health insurance.
