Assistant Professor in Experimental Solid State Physics and Applications
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver invites applications from outstanding candidates for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the field of Experimental Solid State Physics and Applications. We encourage applications from candidates across a broad range of backgrounds in the Sciences and Applied Sciences. The successful candidate will join UBC's Stewart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute and create an independent research program, which complements the existing strengths of the institute by enhancing the translation of research results to applications. SBQMI has strong experimental and theoretical groups working on diverse materials, and is committed to attracting and training outstanding students and conducting forefront research that spans the field. Details can be found on the Institute website (qmi.ubc.ca), and information on the Department of Physics and Astronomy can be found at phas.ubc.ca.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. Degree or equivalent, an outstanding research record, and are expected to teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and to supervise graduate students. The successful candidate will be appointed at the level of Assistant Professor, but a higher rank may be considered for applicants with exceptional qualifications and experience.
A CV, publications list, a statement of research interests, and a summary of teaching interests and experience are required. Candidates should arrange for three letters of reference. UBC’s strategic plan identifies inclusion as one of our key priorities. We welcome colleagues with the experiences and competencies that can contribute to our principles of inclusion, equity, and diversity throughout campus life. In your application, please include a statement describing your experience working with a diverse student body as well as your past, present and/or future contributions to creating/advancing a culture of equity and inclusion on campus or within your discipline.
Equity and diversity are essential to academic excellence. An open and diverse community fosters the inclusion of voices that have been underrepresented or discouraged. We encourage applications from members of groups that have been marginalized on any grounds enumerated under the BC Human Rights Code including sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, racialization, disability, political belief, religion, marital or family status, age, and/or status as a First Nation, Metis, Inuit or Indigenous person. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
Review of applications will start Nov. 30, 2019 and will continue until the position is filled. The expected start date is Summer 2020, but is negotiable.
