Cornell University invites applications and nominations for professor and chair of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics (MBG). The department engages in cutting-edge research, training, and teaching to solve basic questions in the life sciences (http://mbg.cornell.edu/ ). MBG is exceptionally well positioned to understand fundamental principles of biology, and to apply biological knowledge to critical problems in medicine, agriculture and the environment. We aim to inspire and train the next generation of scientists, teachers, and communicators by providing research mentorship and instruction in biochemistry, bioinformatics, cell biology, genetics, molecular biology, and related disciplines.
We seek a prominent scientist and an enterprising, inspiring and collaborative individual who will lead the department as its chair in all aspects of academic activity. This includes providing strategic leadership to develop a vision for the future of the department to enhance current and emerging programs; the stewardship of resources, personnel and collaboration across the Cornell campus; collaborating with the faculty and academic staff to foster excellence in teaching, research, and outreach; and providing oversight for the recruitment, retention and professional development of faculty and staff.
Candidates will be expected to pursue their own academic program at the highest level of scholarship and to have an internationally recognized research and funding record consistent with an appointment at the rank of full professor at Cornell. A Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree is required in a discipline relevant to the department’s multi-disciplinary interests. The successful candidate will have a record of leadership, active participation in academic affairs, commitment to diversity and inclusion and evidence of balance and excellence in research, teaching and outreach activities.
The successful candidate will be hired as a full professor, to serve as chair for five years with the possibility of renewal. The incumbent would hold a tenured academic appointment in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2020 or as negotiated.
