Job Details

Small Molecule Design and Development (SMDD) is an innovation-focused organization striving to identify, develop and apply the most cutting-edge technologies to deliver maximum benefit to our patients. Within SMDD, the process analytical technology (PAT) group is essential to enabling process understanding and control, with a goal of enabling next generation design and development of pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical processes. We seek to develop and explore new process analytical technologies across our portfolio with specific focus on integration and automation of analytical instrumentation, integrating key information with broader data systems, and developing integrated process analytical control strategies. Top candidates for this position will be expected to:
  • Enable successful design, development, and implementation of PAT for online monitoring of small molecules, synthetic peptides and oligonucleotides.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in chromatography, mass spectrometry, vibrational spectroscopy, instrument engineering, sensors or other analytical technologies.
  • Develop systems integration and information management tools; navigate multiple software languages, instrument control software, and engineering control systems.
  • Demonstrate high learning agility by identifying and exploiting new scientific concepts, strong technical problem-solving skills, and be self-motivated to achieve quality results in a fast-paced environment.
  • Connect with the broader Lilly organization including Discovery, Process Development and Manufacturing to inform areas of development.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to speak to both technical and business-related implications of their work.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to work in a collaborative, cross-functional team-oriented environment.
  • Embrace diverse thought, background and experience to deliver innovative solutions.

Basic Qualifications

PhD in Analytical or Physical Chemistry, Biochemistry or Engineering with 0-7 years of experience.

Additional Skills/Preferences

  • Experience with data interpretation, including the application of chemometrics, multivariate modeling, and other data manipulation tools.
  • Characterization of synthetic peptides, oligonucleotides and biopolymers.
  • Strong technical knowledge of instrument control software from different vendors.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and apply technical knowledge to meet changing project needs.
  • Flexibility to adjust priorities over time to meet organizational and scientific goals.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities, especially in a team environment.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple activities and manage ambiguity.
