Research at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) in Memphis, TN, invites applications and nominations from nationally and internationally renowned individuals for the position of Program Leader in Chemical Biology. This is twelve-month full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the associate or full professor level that will be based at UTHSC Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. The Program in Chemical Biology is charged with the primary responsibility at UTHSC for academic efforts in novel compound discovery, optimization, delivery, and mechanism for the treatment of patients with cancer.

The appointed faculty will join a dynamic, multi-disciplinary team of investigators whose expertise spans a range of disciplines within the College of Pharmacy including pharmacology, physiology, electrophysiology, ion channel research, urological research, smooth muscle function and regulation, nanotechnology, drug delivery, drug discovery and development related to identifying novel pharmacological targets for cancer, infectious diseases, urological indications, and other related disciplines. The Chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Dr. Georgi V. Petkov, is encouraging the establishment of research collaborative teams aiming at submissions of NIH P- and U-level grants such as program project grants and center grants with the leading PI based in the Department.

Through the auspices of the UTHSC Center for Cancer Research, the Program Leader will coordinate multidisciplinary research beyond that of the College of Pharmacy and include researchers with expertise in viral and bacterial infectious diseases, immunology, cancer, drug development, basic mechanisms of diseases, genomics, and bioinformatics. Outstanding collaborative opportunities outside the College of Pharmacy and excellent resources are available through the School of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Graduate Health Sciences, and Health Professions. This position comes with a generous start-up package and state-of-the-art laboratory space. Resources will be proportional to the proposed scope of research.

Qualifications

Applicants are expected to be leaders in the field of cancer therapeutics with an internationally-recognized research program that is supported by robust extramural federal funding. Applicants must have a PhD, MD, or equivalent degree, and a strong record of research productivity and accomplishments. 

The successful candidates are expected to have strong extramural federally funded research programs (at least two NIH R01 grants or similar equivalents).

The ideal candidate will possess the ability to maintain competitive extramural funding, a commitment to excellence in teaching in Pharm.D. and graduate programs, and have excellent oral and written communication skills.

The occupant of the position is expected to play a leadership role in research on cancer therapeutics on the UTHSC campus. The qualified candidate should have an outstanding record of research accomplishments and significant extramural funding. S/he is expected to maintain a vigorous, creative, externally funded research program that compliments those of current faculty and builds on existing strengths. The successful candidate will have an outstanding opportunity to develop collaborative research programs across the UTHSC campus. Additional research collaborative opportunities in the area exist at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and the University of Memphis.
