Who we are looking for:
We are looking for a high performing Scientific Review Officer to join Conquer Cancer, the ASCO Foundation. The selected candidate will organize and manage the comprehensive scientific and technical merit review of grant applications submitted to grant programs, and direct the solicitation, application process, review and selection, and reporting for each grant mechanism in the Foundation portfolio.

 

What you will do:

  • Examine and analyze letters of intent and applications for completeness and adherence to policy, identify and manage reviewer conflicts of interest, manage initial scientific and administrative review, and assign applications to reviewers
  • Manage the grants selection and review process including determining the expertise needed to review applications, providing recommendations to committee leadership, recruiting and orienting reviewers for subcommittees, ensuring continuity in approach to evaluating applications and proposals and peer-review adherence, and documenting committee deliberations, findings, and recommendations
  • Serve as a main point of contact for applicants, grantees and reviewers, and respond to inquiries
  • Review reviewers’ summary critiques before distribution to applicants and grantees
  • Review scientific progress reports submitted by grant recipients, determine if satisfactory progress has been made, and resolve outstanding issues and concerns as needed
  • Oversee development and approval of grant policies, procedures, and guidelines for applicants and reviewers, utilize the grants management database, work with Grants and Awards Program staff in writing solicitations for grants and developing funding announcements, and report on grantee progress and accomplishments
  • Evaluate the outcomes of the Grants Program, including scientific advances, subsequent research funding, publications/citations, and career advancement of grant recipients
  • Work with external partner(s) to ensure grant mechanisms are effectively implemented, and collaborate with other departments including Philanthropy, Marketing and Communications to support fundraising and communications about the grants program, grant recipients and research progress
  • Support the Director in planning and implementing new initiatives, future directions and implementing grant-making strategies and priorities adopted by the Board

 

What you will need in order to be successful:

  • PhD in biomedical, life sciences or related field required
  • Minimum five years related experience
  • Extensive scientific knowledge and research experience
  • Experience working with grants management databases
  • Excellent communications skills, both oral and written
  • Strong organizational skills and proven success record with managing high-level complicated projects
  • Self-managed with the ability to juggle multiple projects and priorities with tight deadlines and limited supervision
  • Commitment to work within a team to meet timelines and deliverables
