For the Cluster of Excellence “Physics of Life” the Center for Molecular and Cellular Bioengineering (CMCB) at TU Dresden seeks to fill the position of

Chair (W3)
of Theoretical Physics of Living Matter

as soon as possible.

The central aim of the Cluster of Excellence “Physics of Life” (DFG EXC 2068) is to identify the physical principles that govern the organization of living matter (https://physics-of-life.tu-dresden.de/en). The new Cluster of Excellence is embedded in a synergistic and interdisciplinary network, comprising multiple DRESDEN-concept research Institutes besides the TU Dresden: the Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research Dresden, the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems, and the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics.

The research concept of the chair should integrate itself into the interdisciplinary approach of the cluster and represent a meaningful addition to the research activities in the Dresden area. The successful candidate will be part of a core team of newly appointed full professors that will build and breathe life into the new center. The chair will benefit from generous core funding and support structures (e.g various core facilities). The successful candidate will pursue a theoretical research program focused on the dynamic organization of active living matter. Research activities fall into the fields of statistical physics, information theory as well as nonlinear and nonequilibrium physics and may include active matter theory, the information theory of shape and morphogenesis, theory of chemically active or metabolic matter, energy flows in living systems and spatio-temporal patterning. The candidate is expected to be committed to cross-disciplinary collaborations, by working closely with other “Physics of Life” research groups in physics, biology and computer science. The professorship shall contribute to the teaching obligations of the CMCB.

The successful candidate should have already established an internationally visible research program as an independent group leader. An excellent publication record, teaching experience, and proven ability to attract third party funding are required. A willingness and ability to teach in English is necessary. Applicants must fulfil the employment qualification requirements of § 58 of the Act on the Autonomy of Institutions of Higher Education in the Free State of Saxony (SächsHSFG).

For further scientific questions, please contact Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Stephan Grill, phone: + 49 351 463 40329, E-Mail: recruiting.pol@tu-dresden.de.

TU Dresden seeks to employ more female professors. Hence, we particularly encourage women to apply. Applications from candidates with disabilities or those requiring additional support are very welcome. The University is a certified family-friendly university and offers a Dual Career Service. ”Physics of Life” offers additional financial and logistic support for families. If you have any questions about these topics, please contact the Equal Opportunities Officer of CMCB (Mr. Martin Kaßner, phone +49 351 458 82082) or the Representative of Employees with Disabilities (Mr. Roberto Lemmrich, phone +49 351 463 33175).

Please submit your application including a description of past discoveries and future research interests (7 pages maximum), a CV and full publication list, highlighting the 10 most important publications, a list of past and present 3rd party funding, a certified copy of the certificate documenting your highest academic degree to TU Dresden, CMCB, Sprecher des Exzellenzclusters “Physik des Lebens”, Herrn Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Stephan Grill, Tatzberg 47/49, 01307 Dresden and in electronic form (CD or via the TU Dresden SecureMail Portal https://securemail.tu-dresden.de to recruiting.pol@tu-dresden.de) until 24.10.2019 (stamped arrival date applies).
