Wetland ecology faculty position, Dauphin Island Sea Lab

The Dauphin Island Sea Lab invites applications for a new Senior Marine Scientist I or II (equivalent to tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor) position in the area of Wetland Ecology.

We seek candidates conducting novel and cutting-edge work on ecological processes and interactions in coastal wetland environments. Areas of expertise could include (but are not limited to) ecosystem functions and services of wetlands, effects of sea level rise, mapping and use of satellite data, molecular techniques, bioinformatics, biological-physical interactions, biogeochemical processes, socio-economic impacts, and responses to environmental stresses in the context of climate or other environmental change. Individual interests could span from local to global scales and across multiple levels of organization (organism, population, community, ecosystem), although plans to develop at least part of the research program on the Alabama coast are desirable. Interdisciplinary research with approaches applying innovative field, laboratory, or numerical model-based methods (or a combination of approaches) are encouraged.

The successful candidate will develop and maintain a vigorous extramurally funded research program, teach graduate and undergraduate courses, including an undergraduate course offered during DISL’s summer program (https://www.disl.org/univ-prog/undergrad), advise students (primarily at the graduate level) and participate in Dauphin Island Sea Lab activities.

Qualifications:

• Ph.D. (or similar terminal degree) in marine science, environmental science, biology, ecology, or a related discipline at the time of appointment.
• Proven research background as evidenced by a peer reviewed publication record and recognition in the field commensurate with experience.

Preferences:

• Research interests that complement those of existing DISL faculty.

• Post-doctoral experience of at least 2-3 years in their field of research.
• Strong track record developing a well-funded research program.
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching, with strong communication skills.
• Experience with and commitment to quality mentoring and advising of students.

The Dauphin Island Sea Lab (http://www.disl.org) houses Alabama’s Marine Science Education Consortium, consisting of 23 colleges and universities. The facility is located on Dauphin Island, a barrier island on the Alabama coast in the northern Gulf of Mexico with 15 faculty members and ~40 graduate students in residence. Faculty hold dual appointments at one of the universities in Alabama. In addition to offering over 25 courses for undergraduates in the summer, the Sea Lab hosts a public aquarium called the Estuarium that is focused on the habitats and ecosystems of the northern Gulf of Mexico region, and is home to the Discovery Hall Program, a well-known K-12 education program. Dauphin Island is near the metropolitan area of Mobile with a population of 400,000 and a vibrant history and culture.
