Job Details

Dementia is the greatest health challenge of our century.

The UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) is the biggest UK initiative supporting research to fill this gap.

Research from UK DRI at UCL covers the journey from the patient to the laboratory and back to the patient with improved diagnosis, biomarkers and candidate therapies put to the test.

The De Strooper lab, based in the UK DRI at UCL, is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated scientist to join the team and contribute towards the establishment of the lab in London. The postholder will be responsible for the delivery of a high-quality research project investigating the cellular response that characterises Alzheimer’s disease, including designing and running experiments, recording results, analysing data and writing up the results.

The role will involve significant collaboration with other scientists in the UK DRI, the ARUK UCL Drug Discovery Institute, and research groups at KULeuven and VIB institute in Belgium, and so travel, interaction and cross-communication will be a key element.

This is a unique opportunity to use a variety of techniques, including single cell transcriptomics, molecular and cellular biology, imaging and functional approaches using human stem cells. The postholder will also have the opportunity to utilize the breadth and depth of expertise and technologies available across the collaborating groups, the UK DRI at UCL and research groups at KULeuven and the VIB institute.

The post is funded for three years in the first instance.

You’ll have a PhD in life sciences or a cognate area coupled with expertise in tissue culture, cell biology and molecular biology; experience with iPS cells would be an advantage. Good communication and organisational skills are essential, as is the ability to build strong collaborative and cooperative working relationships. An excellent academic track record is highly desirable.

If you have any queries regarding the vacancy or the application process, please contact UK DRI HQ Head of HR Laura Allum, l.allum@ucl.ac.uk, 020 3108 8137.

Company

Dementia is the biggest health challenge of our century – currently affecting fifty million people worldwide, projected to triple by 2050, with huge financial, emotional and social impact on patients, their carers, families and friends.

Dementia is caused by a set of complex neurodegenerative disorders, with Alzheimer’s disease accounting for about 60% of cases. To date there is no way to prevent or even slow the rate of progression of dementia – this is because there is still a major knowledge gap in our basic understanding of Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases.

The UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) is the biggest UK initiative supporting research to fill this gap.

Our mission is to become a globally leading multidisciplinary research institute into the spectrum of neurodegenerative disorders causing dementia, driving a step change in our understanding of the disease and accelerating the discovery, development and delivery of interventions that will help diagnose, treat and ultimately prevent dementia.

The UK DRI currently has 50 principal investigators. Over the next five years we are expecting the UK DRI to grow to over 70 PIs and over 700 researchers focusing on different aspects of dementia and developing new technologies and approaches for research, diagnosis, treatment and care.

The UK DRI’s research groups are based at University College London, the University of Cambridge, Cardiff University, Edinburgh University, Imperial College London and King’s College London, with the UK DRI Headquarters based at UCL. The UK DRI is a joint £290 million investment from the Medical Research Council, Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Research UK. You can read more about the UK DRI at www.ukdri.ac.uk.
