Dementia is the greatest health challenge of our century.
The UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) is the biggest UK initiative supporting research to fill this gap.
Research from UK DRI at UCL covers the journey from the patient to the laboratory and back to the patient with improved diagnosis, biomarkers and candidate therapies put to the test.
This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and ambitious bioinformatician to join the De Strooper Lab at the UK DRI in London. Bart De Strooper is an active and internationally acclaimed researcher with a large and productive laboratory programme currently divided between Leuven and London. His research focuses on understanding the fundamental mechanisms that underlie neurodegenerative disease with a particular interest in the cellular phase of Alzheimer’s disease, the neuro-immune axis and single cell genomics.
This is an excellent chance to work on high impact, state-of-the-art projects in a stimulating and social international research environment, undertaking world-class science under the guidance of a leader in Alzheimer’s biology. Your project aims to understand early cellular changes happening during the onset of Alzheimer's disease using techniques such as single cell transcriptomics or proteomics. Collaboration is key, and your project will be an integral part of a larger initiative to work towards a complete spatial and temporal cellular atlas of Alzheimer's disease.
The posts are funded for three years in the first instance, with the potential for further extension.
You will hold a PhD in bioinformatics or a cognate area or have submitted your thesis prior to starting in post. You’ll have good knowledge of machine learning and experience of high-performance computing (including software development, Python etc), database management and analysis of high-throughput data. You’ll enjoy working collaboratively with colleagues in a multidisciplinary setting and be passionate about the mission and research work of the UK DRI. To be appointed at the more senior level you’ll have demonstrable experience of leading projects and supervising staff or students.

Dementia is the biggest health challenge of our century – currently affecting fifty million people worldwide, projected to triple by 2050, with huge financial, emotional and social impact on patients, their carers, families and friends.
Dementia is caused by a set of complex neurodegenerative disorders, with Alzheimer’s disease accounting for about 60% of cases. To date there is no way to prevent or even slow the rate of progression of dementia – this is because there is still a major knowledge gap in our basic understanding of Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases.
The UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) is the biggest UK initiative supporting research to fill this gap.
Our mission is to become a globally leading multidisciplinary research institute into the spectrum of neurodegenerative disorders causing dementia, driving a step change in our understanding of the disease and accelerating the discovery, development and delivery of interventions that will help diagnose, treat and ultimately prevent dementia.
The UK DRI currently has 50 principal investigators. Over the next five years we are expecting the UK DRI to grow to over 70 PIs and over 700 researchers focusing on different aspects of dementia and developing new technologies and approaches for research, diagnosis, treatment and care.
The UK DRI’s research groups are based at University College London, the University of Cambridge, Cardiff University, Edinburgh University, Imperial College London and King’s College London, with the UK DRI Headquarters based at UCL.
