Job Details
The mission of The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation, and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research and prevention, and through education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees and the public.
The Research Assistant II impacts quality and efficiency of research projects at the department level. Coordinates technical and data management duties in support of various research projects.
Key Functions:
1. Mouse husbandry, breeding, and colony maintenance
2. Genotyping of genetically modified mice based on PCR and Southern Blot
3. Mouse dissection with tissue, blood and cell harvesting
4. Processing of animal samples for histology, cytology, and hematologic measurements
5. Flow-cytometry
6. Basic microscopic and morphometric techniques
7. Generation and maintenance of mammalian cell lines
8. Secretion cell assays
9. DNA, RNA and protein isolation, purification and identification (PCR, Q-PCR, Northern, Southern and Western blots)
10. Constructs, assembles, and operates laboratory apparatus and equipment
11. Reads literature, communicates freely and clearly, and confers with superiors regarding new procedures and modifies them according to the needs of the project
12. Records and evaluates data obtained in accordance with methods requested and confers with superiors regarding results obtained
13. Coordinates the distribution of routine and/or experimental lab specimens to appropriate laboratory personnel within the laboratory and within other collaborating laboratories in the Texas Medical Center
14. Other duties as assigned
MARGINAL OR PERIODIC FUNCTIONS:
1. Presents data in formal Laboratory Meetings (quarterly).
2. Presents papers in Laboratory Journal Club Meetings (quarterly).
3. Responsible for ordering supplies for the laboratory
4. Participates in collaborative research projects with other laboratories
5. Coordinates the export and import of animals and reagents to other collaborating laboratories
EDUCATION:
Required: Bachelor's degree with major course works in one of the basic sciences.
Preferred: Master's degree with major course works in one of the basic sciences.
EXPERIENCE:
Required: Two years experience in scientific or experimental research work. No experience required with preferred degree.
