Technical Instructor

The MIT Department of Biology seeks a technical instructor to provide administrative and instructional support for its lab courses. S/he will assist with teaching molecular biology and genetics laboratory courses, with an emphasis on experimental design, critical data analysis/scientific interpretation, and the development of written communications skills.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop lab curriculum and lab teaching materials (protocols, manuals, study questions, etc.)
  • Develop teaching materials for recitation sections and write course materials
  • Attend lectures and coordinate lecture and recitation materials with faculty
  • Schedule lectures, exams, recitations, and homework assignments
  • Recruit, train, and supervise teaching assistants (TAs)
  • Maintain course websites
  • Monitor and address student interpersonal, attendance, and integrity issues
  • Compile grading spreadsheets and assist faculty with final grade assignments
  • Provide coverage in staff members’ absences
  • Assist in teaching the application of modern methods of genetics and molecular cell biology in the laboratory
  • Manage the lab, order materials, keep lab stocked with reagents, ensure proper disposal of hazardous materials, oversee safety, and perform related duties

Qualifications: 

  • Advanced degree in biology or related field (Ph.D. preferred)
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and computer skills
  • Ability to lead and train TAs and manage relationships with large numbers of undergraduate students
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Discretion and judgment with confidential student information/issues  
  • Relevant experience teaching college-level courses, including TA position or non-traditional roles is preferred.
