The Biology Program at California State University Channel Islands invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Developmental Biology at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful applicant should be able to contribute to the departments core course offerings, teach developmental biology with lab and develop upper level courses in their specialty which may include evolutionary developmental biology and/or developmental neurobiology. The successful candidate will establish an undergraduate-based research program in developmental biology. A Ph.D. in Biology or a closely related field and postdoctoral experience are required. All members of the faculty are expected to assume an active collegial role in the planning and governance of the institution through service on campus-wide committees and to promote a learning environment supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the departments core course offerings
  • Teach developmental biology with lab
  • Develop upper level courses in area of specialty
  • Establish an undergraduate-based research program in developmental biology.
  • Assume an active collegial role in the planning and governance of the institution through service on campus-wide committees
  • Promote a learning environment supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds.  

Required Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in Biology or a closely related scientific discipline from an accredited institution. Post-doctoral experience.  
  • Evidence of the ability to establish an active, undergraduate-based research program in Developmental Biology.
  • Teaching experience at the college/university level.
  • Evidence of on-going scholarly activities.
  • Evidence of the ability to teach core courses in biology and upper-division courses in developmental biology at an undergraduate institution.
  • Evidence of the ability to assume an active collegial role in the planning and governance of the institution.
  • Applicants should demonstrate the ability and commitment to effectively work with and engage a diverse student population and evidence of successful mentoring minoritized students with special focus on Latinx, African-American, and Native American students.
  • As a condition of employment, this position will require a background check. The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching developmental biology
  • A record of effective teaching
  • Experience mentoring undergraduate students
