Postdoctoral Scientist

We are looking for talented, highly motivated postdoctoral researchers to join the laboratory of Dr. Melanie Carless to study the genetic and epigenetic contributions to complex diseases and establish related translational models. Our laboratory focuses on complex diseases, such as cardiometabolic and psychiatric diseases, which are associated with high mortality and morbidity rates. Ongoing projects incorporate next-generation sequencing, stem cell culture, epigenetic editing technologies, and statistical and bioinformatics analyses to investigate the role of DNA methylation, DNA hydroxymethylation, gene and miRNA expression, and sequence variation in complex diseases and related phenotypes.

The successful applicant will join a dynamic research program aimed at defining causal epigenetic signatures of chronic complex diseases, and developing therapies aimed at combatting these. The applicant will report to Dr. Melanie Carless, and will be expected to conduct laboratory-based research and/or data analysis and bioinformatics, as well as prepare and publish scientific manuscripts. They will be trained in experimental techniques and scientific communication, and mentorship will be provided for career advancement. The University of Texas San Antonio provides a collegial and stimulating work environment with excellent stem cell, genomic, and computing facilities. San Antonio is a vibrant city with a collaborative research community, which continues to grow.

Education/Experience/Skills: A PhD in genetics, biomedicine, molecular biology, neuroscience, or related discipline is required. The applicant is expected to have substantial experience with either:

  1. Data analysis/bioinformatics; experience or coursework in scripting (e.g., Python, Perl, R, Linux) is welcomed
  2. Stem cell biology; experience with 2D or 3D neuronal cell models is preferred
  3. Molecular/cellular biology; experience in gene editing is preferred, as is additional experience in fluorescence imaging and analysis, nucleic acid and protein extraction, next-generation sequencing, and/or animal models.

Good oral and written communication skills are desired.
