Position Overview:Keck Graduate Institute (KGI) was founded in 1997 as the first higher education institution in the United States dedicated exclusively to education and research related to the applied life sciences. KGI offers innovative postgraduate degrees and certificates that integrate life and health sciences, business, pharmacy, engineering, and genetics, with a focus on industry projects, hands-on industry experiences, and team collaborations. The Dean of the Henry E. Riggs School of Applied Life Sciences will lead efforts to continue the school's tradition of innovative teaching, learning, research, and scholarship. The Dean is responsible for, but not limited to, academic planning, assessment and accreditation activities, recruitment of faculty, faculty development and evaluation, participating in student recruitment, advising, budget development, and overseeing the school's interdisciplinary faculty. The Riggs School is known for its innovative masters programs designed to educate scientists for careers in the life science industries. The school's on-time graduation rate is over 95%, with almost all graduates developing successful careers. The Dean will oversee the school's four industry oriented masters programs: the Master of Business and Science (MBS), Master of Engineering in Biopharmaceutical Engineering (MEng), Master of Science in Medical Device Engineering (MSMDE), and the Postdoctoral Professional Masters in Bioscience Management (PPM). The Dean will also oversee three research oriented masters programs, successful one-year premedical certificate programs, and participate in the oversight of an institute-wide PhD program.

The Dean of the Henry E. Riggs School will report to the President, and represents KGI on the Academic Deans Committee of the Claremont Colleges. Education and Experience:
Must possess an earned doctorate in an area relevant to the mission of the school. The successful candidate will have prior administrative experience in an academic setting, a demonstrated capacity for leadership, possess a strong record of teaching, service and scholarly achievement and demonstrated ability to attract and secure funding to support school educational, service, and research initiatives.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Individuals must possess knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential function of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions may be performed, with or without, reasonable accommodations, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
  • Working with faculty, staff, and the KGI leadership team, assume overall responsibility for developing and implementing the strategic vision for the school.
  • Supervise faculty within the school and oversee the annual faculty performance evaluation process.
  • Provide executive direction, leadership, and mentorship to all faculty committees and offices in the school.
  • In line with KGI's strategic plan, oversee the continued growth of existing programs and the development of new programs within the School.
  • Lead efforts to develop and implement innovative teaching approaches within the school, centered on active learning.
  • Oversee faculty research efforts within the school.This includes working with faculty to develop research goals, provide a supportive environment for fund-raising and scholarship, and evaluating the success of faculty research activities. The Dean will also collaborate with the KGI Dean of Research and the Deans of other KGI schools to develop institute wide research initiatives.
  • Lead fundraising efforts in collaboration with the Institutional Development (Advancement) department.
  • The dean will take on a teaching load that may range from 1 to 2 courses per year.
  • Collaborate with the Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid to develop and implement student recruiting and yield activities involving faculty within the school.
  • Foster a safe and respectful academic environment that facilitates attracting, retaining, and developing outstanding faculty, administrators and staff.
  • Work with KGI's Director of Corporate Partnerships and the KGI leadership team to broaden and deepen relationships with companies and other organizations supporting teaching programs and research within the school.
  • Formulate and efficiently manage the budget of the school to allocate its resources in accordance with the best interests of the school and the Institute.
  • Oversee the assessment of student learning within the school. Oversee the preparation of data for annual KGI assessment reports, organize program review activities within the school, and participate in reporting activities for WSCUC, KGI's regional accreditor.
  • Be active in professional and community activities, assuming leadership roles and representing the school as appropriate in organizations and committees at the local, state and national level.
  • Provide vision and leadership for the integration of technology to support learning for on-campus and online programs.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Individuals must possess knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential function of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions may be performed, with or without, reasonable accommodations, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
  • Proven ability to manage a complex academic enterprise, typically obtained through experience as a dean, associate dean, assistant dean, or department chair within an academic organization pursuing both teaching and research.
  • 8 to 10 years of full-time teaching experience at a university, with a significant emphasis on graduate level education.
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing; possess the ability to listen to all points of view, manage conflicts, build consensus, and inform others of policies and decisions.
  • Ability and motivation to work collaboratively with colleagues across KGI to develop, implement, and enhance the school's education and research programs.
  • Innovative and entrepreneurial.
  • Demonstrated success in raising external funds such as grants and contracts and corporate contacts is preferred.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the promotion of diversity and inclusion as a value in the Institute.
  • A valid driver's license or equivalent means of reliable transportation to off-site meetings and events is required.
  • Holiday, weekend and evening work hours will be required. Regular hours may vary to meet the needs of the Institute or department.

Physical and Mental Requirements
Ability to maintain good concentration level while dealing with interruptions; attention to details with emphasis on accuracy; capable of giving, receiving, and analyzing information, formulating work plans, and articulating goals and action plans. Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time. Standing for extended periods of time. Reaching and extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than the whole hand(s), or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard. Communication skills using the spoken word. Ability to see within normal parameters. Ability to hear within normal parameters. Ability to bend and stoop, for example, to file. Ability to move about. Ability to lift and carry short distances up to 20 lbs., for example to lift or move office supplies, files, books and packages.

Ability to drive locally. Occasionally, will be required to stand for prolonged periods of time at activities/events on and off-campus.
