Associate Specialist (Step I-IV)/Full Specialist (Step I-IV) - Protein Engineering/Purification- Innovative Genomics Institute - Center For Translational Genomics

The Innovative Genomics Institute at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Specialist in the Center for Translational Genomics, in the area of Protein Engineering and Purification. The specialist will be responsible for performing and overseeing tasks related to engineering and production of genome-editing enzymes for preclinical research, including cloning of variants, large and small scale protein expression and purification, and development and implementation of quality control assays for preclinical and clinical research. They will draft and maintain Standard Operating Procedures and other documents that control protein analysis procedures. The protein specialist will be expected to provide expertise to IGI labs performing protein purification protocols, and participate in the publication of results to the genome editing community. The position will involve scientific contributions to multiple projects with collaborators across the IGI and will require the ability to innovate, design, and troubleshoot projects independently. The approximate start date will be in June 2019.

Basic Qualifications (At the time of application)
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent international degree at the time of application.

Additional Qualifications (By Start Date)
At least five (5) years of research experience.

Preferred Qualifications (By Start Date)

  • Excellent organizational skills and interpersonal skills
  • Publication history reflecting expertise in protein engineering, protein production, or related field
  • Experience with standard cell biology techniques such as western blot and ELISA
  • General computer skills including Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
  • Experience in preclinical research, including Good Laboratory Practices
  • Experience in regulated manufacturing, including Good Manufacturing Practice
  • Experience with endotoxin reduction/minimization in protein samples
  • Experience training and managing laboratory personnel
  • Experience acting as laboratory safety officer.
  • At least five (5) years of experience with protein expression and purification in e.coli

At least five (5) years of experience with standard molecular biology techniques including cloning, PCR, electrophoresis

Appointment:
This position reports to Dr. Brian Staskawicz. The initial appointment will be at 100% time for one year with the possibility of extension based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding.
