Lecturer/Program Director

The College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications for a full-time, 12-month, non-tenure-track lecturer position that includes also serving as the Program Director of UMBC's newly launched bachelor’s degree in Translational Life Science Technology (TLST).  This position is located at UMBC’s branch campus in Rockville, Maryland at The Universities at Shady Grove.

RESPONSIBILITIES: As full-time teaching faculty, the incumbent will be responsible for teaching classes in the TLST program.  The TLST curriculum is designed to align with the growing field of translational science, which is the process of turning a scientific discovery into a life-saving solution, while addressing critical workforce needs of the biotechnology industry. This is UMBC’s first undergraduate STEM program being offered at The Universities at Shady Grove near the growing biotechnology industry hub in Montgomery County, Maryland.

In addition to teaching, the incumbent will be responsible for administrative duties related to the TLST program.  This includes overseeing curriculum and instruction; assisting with the recruitment and support of TLST faculty; assisting with student recruitment and retention activities; advising students including guidance on internship opportunities; and carry out the necessary administrative duties associated with academic program oversight and student support.

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have a master’s degree (doctoral degree preferred) in biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or a field relevant to the TLST classes with three years of relevant academic or professional experience. Teaching experience in the classroom and/or on-line of TLST-related classes at the undergraduate or graduate levels is required.  Experience working with community college and transfer students as well as the use of innovative teaching strategies is desired but not required. Candidates should also have strong organizational, management, and interpersonal skills and enjoy working in transdisciplinary, dynamic environments due to the administrative duties of the position.

For best consideration, please submit a (1) cover letter of interest, (2) curriculum vitae, (3) separate statement discussing your teaching philosophy and relevant professional experiences and (4) list of three professional references by Monday, October 28, 2019, for best consideration.  Applications will only be accepted via Interfolio at https://apply.interfolio.com/67231. The position will remain open until filled.
