PhD-Student (f/m/d) "In-situ nanoscale characterization of catalytic materials"

The Helmholtz research group “Nanoscale Operando CO2 Photo-Electrocatalysis” headed by Dr. Christopher Kley at the Helmholtz Center Berlin for Materials and Energy and the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society, Department of Interface Science (Prof. Beatriz Roldan Cuenya) focuses on material synthesis and nanoscale understanding of solid / liquid interfaces for applications in catalysis and energy conversion.
Position
To date, progress toward rational design of catalysts and photomaterials is hampered by deficient knowledge of nanoscale dynamic materials properties and structure-property relationships under reaction conditions. We offer a full-time PhD-student work on the in-situ characterization of electro- and photoelectrocatalytic materials employing atomic force microscopy (AFM) in the liquid phase. Cutting edge AFM based methods will be applied to decipher the local morphological and electronic material proterties under reaction conditions. These studies will be combined with catalytic reactivity and spectroelectrochemical investigations to elucidate nanoscale structure-property relationships and charge-transport phenomena at solid-liquid interfaces. In a synergistic manner, it is anticipated to translate key findings into novel strategies for designing advanced catalytic materials.
Required
- Master degree in chemistry, physical chemistry, physics, material science, or chemical engineering
- Good written an oral comunication skills in English
Preferred
- Highly motivated, detail- and goal-oriented with excellent problem solving skills in a multi-dsciplinary team
- Good data collection, analysis, and presentation skills
- Knowledge about organic / inorganic material synthesis, electrochemistry, or nanoscale characterization methods

What we offer
