OVERVIEW
The Research Grant Program Officer fulfills independent responsibility for large, complex research grant programs / initiatives. Participates in short- and long-term strategic planning for grant-making, program evaluation, and research strategies. Provides guidance to less experienced team members. This position is an incredible opportunity for a well-organized individual to manage a large, multi-million DARPA Panacea grant (https://www.fbo.gov/index?s=opportunity&mode=form&id=09d21e8933de69b90507c26b405dc856&tab=core&_cview=0) which has the potential to change the treatment of pain. 

In this role you will serve as primary consultant for a large or complex research grant program/initiatives:
Serves as primary consultant for Panacea DARPA grant.
Consults with faculty and researchers and administrative staff to ensure that all necessary reporting is completed, including but not limited to monthly financial status reports, 6 week technical status reports and quarterly technical status reports and Final Report. Interfaces with QBI CFO and Administrator to monitor the progress of spending against the budget and determine if any co-investigators will need to be reminded of their milestones and timelines.
Consults with faculty and researchers to ensure completion and reporting of mid-phase demos demonstrating achievement of quantitative metrics and milestones as outlined in the proposal
Consults with faculty and researchers to ensure that end-of-phase demonstrations of program progress are completed (a demo of the platform capability) that is presented as a report and in-person demo that details the advances of major technical tasks within specified time frames and metrics.
Reviews and analyzes project for emerging issues and potential blockers and works with stakeholders to resolve them proactively.
Coordinates all team communications and meetings to ensure achievement of collaborative scientific efforts and alignment towards achieving milestones and metrics.
Represents initiative with other organizations within the academic or scientific community and with government and community stakeholders sharing common objectives.
Reviews project plan and progress towards milestones regularly
Keeps abreast of developments in research area to identify expert advisors and peer reviewers.
Consults with faculty and researchers on development of future proposals
Project Management experience imperative
Experience with large budgets (5-10M at minimum)  imperative.

It is essential for the person holding this position to have not only an understanding but a passion for science. This project will demand rigorous and accurate reporting as well as meticulous oversight to enable a group of very talented scientists to keep moving forward on their work. The employee is also expected to be the first point of contact with DARPA, and therefore should either have an understanding of the agency, or the ability to quickly grasp how it works and what it priorities in terms of communication and reports.

QUANTITATIVE BIOSCIENCES INSTITUTE
The Quantitative Biosciences Institute (QBI) is an Organized Research Unit at UCSF that seeks transformative results in biomedicine; QBI supports fundamental quantitative research in the biological sciences. QBI fosters collaborations across the biomedical and the physical sciences, seeking quantitative methods to address pressing problems in biology and biomedicine. Motivated by problems of human disease, QBI is committed to investigating fundamental biological mechanisms, because ultimately solutions to many diseases have been revealed by unexpected discoveries in the basic sciences. QBI currently has four center grants focused on cancer, infectious diseases and psychiatric disorders.

Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
In-depth academic background and experience in selected area of research including record of publications in related field(s)
Advanced oral and written communication skills. Advanced skills analyzing information, problems, situations, policies or procedures to define the problem, need or objective
Demonstrated track record of advanced program planning and management of projects

PhD
Project management certification, experience or coursework
Proven ability to formulate solutions alternative choices and implications for implementation
Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results
