The University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), Veterinary Population Medicine Department announces the recruitment of candidates for the prestigious Patrick T. Redig Endowed Chair in Raptor and Ecosystem Health. We are seeking an individual with an established record as a leader in conservation medicine and/or ecosystem health. The Patrick T. Redig endowed chair will provide leadership to The Raptor Center (TRC) in addressing strategic issues related to raptor AND ecosystem health; conducting applied research related to raptor medicine and surgery, welfare, conservation, and the role of raptors in the health of the environment; engaging the community in understanding and influencing the challenges that raptors face at the intersection of humans and wildlife and securing resources and partnerships to ensure The Raptor Center’s mission.

This contract or tenured faculty position has an initial appointment of up to five years, is thereafter annually renewable and could lead to a long-term appointment. The appointment is at the rank of associate or full professor, dependent upon qualifications and experience consistent with collegiate and University policy.

Requirements: Candidates must have an advanced degree, either a DVM or a PhD or an equivalent degree from a foreign University, along with significant experience and recognition as a leader in avian health and/or ecosystem health. The successful candidate must have demonstrated:

  • community engagement and building of partnerships
  • strong interpersonal skills
  • excellent oral and written communication
  • strong record of scholarship, teaching, public outreach and/or service
  • ability to interact positively with media, donors, key stakeholders and partners
  • experience building collaborative networks and highly functional teams. 

Preferred: Candidates with both a DVM degree or equivalent and an additional advanced degree (i.e. PhD, MS, MPH) is preferred. Research experience in raptor/avian/wildlife ecosystem health is desired along with grant writing and the securing of resources to support a research program. In addition, the candidate will have experience in teaching and mentoring for both graduate and professional students. Candidates with a DVM degree or equivalent are encouraged to become eligible for licensure in veterinary medicine in the state of Minnesota (http://www.vetmed.state.mn.us/) and/or be board certified in a recognized specialty college (e.g. ACVPM or ABVP). 

Duties: The Chair’s efforts will be to develop and lead an innovative, collaborative, and impactful research and outreach program. The specific duties are to provide strategic leadership and program development for TRC (50%, reporting to the CVM Dean and in consultation with the TRC Board) and to contribute to scholarship, teaching and mentoring, and clinical oversight (50%, reporting to the VPM Department Chair). The research component of this position may be translational or fundamental to complement and provide unique expertise to existing programs. 

Salary/Rank: Commensurate with experience and qualifications.
