Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist

The Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology at Auburn University seeks exceptional applicants for the position of Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist – Cotton, Soybean, and Peanut Insect Pest Management. Expected start date is April 1, 2020.

Responsibilities: This is a 12-month tenure-track position with 75% extension and 25% research responsibilities. The successful candidate selected for this position will develop a research and extension program to deliver unbiased, research-based information on pest management to extension agents, farmers, producers, and stakeholders. The selected candidate will work toward finding solutions for managing insect pests by developing sustainable integrated pest management programs (IPM) to protect the three main broadleaf crops (cotton, soybean, and peanut) in Alabama from economic losses. The selected candidate will work collaboratively with extension specialists, regional extension agents, and scientists at all levels, and provide leadership on developing IPM programs and delivering information to extension clientele and other stakeholders. 

The successful candidate will be expected to secure extramural funding to support programs, publish technical and refereed articles, develop a positive national reputation for their program, and collaborate effectively with departmental faculty and colleagues in other disciplines. In addition, the candidate will be expected to provide guest lectures in courses devoted to entomology, pest management and crop production, and advise graduate students. Service to the department, college, and university is also expected.

Qualifications:  An earned Ph.D. degree in Entomology, Plant Protection or a related scientific discipline at the time employment begins; evidence of knowledge and experience in applied entomology; excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills, leadership, and independence; ability to collaborate and obtain extramural funding;, and interest in engaging a variety of stakeholders and the public. The selected candidate must meet eligibility requirements for work in the United States at the time of appointment.  Desired qualifications include postdoctoral research experience; experience in conducting and evaluating extension or outreach programs; and expertise in statistics and experimental design.  The ideal candidate will also have experience in grantsmanship and in implementing pest management programs in row crops, and be familiar with related disciplines such as plant pathology, weed science, and applied biotechnology.
