Director of the Cornell-China Agricultural University Joint Degree Program in Food Science

 

Position: Open Rank, Tenure-track.

 

Location: Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14853-5701. The academic home for this position is the Department of Food Science in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Regular travel to China Agricultural University (CAU) in Beijing, China is also expected.

 

Summary: The Department of Food Science at Cornell University seeks an individual at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level, for a unique opportunity to initiate and direct a new joint undergraduate degree program with China Agricultural University. The candidate will also build a strong, internationally recognized research program at Cornell, which is consistently ranked as having one of the top Food Science departments globally.

 

Position Description and Responsibilities: This tenure-track position is 50% teaching, 50% research on a 9-month academic year basis. Teaching responsibilities will include serving as Director of the newly established Cornell-China Agricultural University (CAU) joint undergraduate degree program in Food Science. The program will commence instruction in Fall 2020 and expects to enroll 500 undergraduate students once it reaches full capacity. Director responsibilities will involve program development and oversight, coordinating the hiring of new teaching faculty at the CAU campus, and contributing materials to instruction as appropriate. The language of instruction of the Cornell-CAU program is English. The candidate will also teach an undergraduate course to complement existing food science offerings at the Cornell Ithaca Campus, and will be responsible for mentoring and advising undergraduate and graduate students. Research responsibilities will be to develop a world class, externally funded research program in an area of Food Science. Programs that complement existing Department of Food Science research programs and address priority areas are desirable: Foods for Health; Plant Based Foods; Food Safety (Chemical, Microbiological); Food Systems Sustainability; Food Systems Modeling; Food Science Education. Other areas of research relevant to the field of Food Science may also be considered.

 

Qualifications: A Doctoral degree in Food Science, Food Chemistry, Food Processing and Engineering, or other related fields and prior research and teaching experience in an academic position are required. A record of excellence in scholarship as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals and demonstrated success in securing competitive grants is expected. High interest and/or prior experience in Food Science curriculum development, international and cross-institutional activities are highly desirable. Knowledge of Chinese language (Mandarin) is preferred but not required.

 

Salary and rank will be commensurate with academic credentials and experience.
