The Program Administrator (PA) of the Office of Education & Training will provide administrative leadership for the Fred Hutch/University of Washington Cancer Consortium’s Office of Education & Training (OET), which seeks to prepare the next generation of scientist to work at the frontiers of cancer and related research. The Cancer Consortium was established in 2002 to build upon the complementary strengths and resources of three partner institutions: the Fred Hutch, which had been a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center since 1973; the University of Washington, which had significant strength in cancer care and laboratory sciences; and Seattle Children’s, the region’s major pediatric academic center. In 2008, the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, the cancer treatment center founded by the three partner institutions, was formally added as a fourth partner. In this role, the PA will also serve as the administrative leader for the continuum of the Fred Hutch’s education and training efforts.

The PA is responsible for helping lead the continuum of education programs at Fred Hutch and within the Consortium as part of the OET. The OET provides leadership for the diverse collection of education programs with the goals of (1) encouraging young students to engage in and experience science; (2) providing exceptional training and support for graduate students and postdoctoral and clinical fellows so that they will be poised to tackle a range of careers in cancer research; and (3) maximizing the success of junior faculty through mentoring and support as they transition to independent scientists. Enhancing diversity in science through our education programs is a part of this effort.

The PA will coordinate across the spectrum of programs to ensure a holistic approach to education across the Consortium. The PA is also responsible for helping to define programmatic directions for the education portfolio and to help secure funding for new programs and help them get established. They will work closely with the administrative leadership for the Fred Hutch’s pre-baccalaureate program, the graduate program office, and the postdoctoral training office and help facilitate interactions between the different educational levels. They will likewise have a major role in encouraging and facilitating interactions across programs at Consortium partner institutions and fostering the sharing of best practices. The PA will also oversee the data management for the comprehensive tracking and reporting of students, trainees, and mentors throughout the pipeline programs and across the Consortium so that our education outcomes are transparent and there is data to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses. Additional roles include seeking ways to improve funding opportunities, including working with our philanthropy team, engaging in outreach, program development, and implementation.

The PA of the Office of Education and Training, reports to the faculty member who is the Director of the OET, the Administrator of the Cancer Consortium, and the Vice President of Research Administration. They will oversee other staff of the OET.



  • Manage the landscape of educational program and help identify future directions for education and training
  • Oversee all administrative aspects of the OET, including staff
  • Provide overall leadership that facilitates the interactions and sharing of information and practices across education programs focused on different levels of training
  • Provide overall leadership that facilitates the interactions and sharing of information and practices across education programs at the different Consortium partner institutions, including tracking of trainees
  • Work closely with the Director of the OET to enhance education and training, lead innovation in education and training, and define new directions
  • Participate in efforts to fund our education efforts through grants and philanthropy
  • Work with education programs to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion across education and training programs
  • Oversee and provide input into methods to define metrics across the programs
  • Managing our efforts within the Coalition for the Next Generation of Life Sciences



  • An advanced degree in science and/or science education, preferably a PhD in biological sciences with subsequent experience in education
  • Substantial experience in education-related activities, preferably in an academic or non-profit research setting
  • Strong leadership qualities and skills are essential as are competencies in collaborative interactions, people development, sound judgement, high degree of integrity, and creative problem solving
