Assistant Professor Faculty Position in Ecology

The Department of Biology at the University of Missouri-St. Louis invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the area of ecology at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful candidates will join a dynamic group of biology faculty as well as participate in the Harris World Ecology Center. Candidates will be expected to lead an independent, externally-funded research program and teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Ecology research programs that would add to our traditional strengths in ecology, evolution, and behavior are especially encouraged. Candidates with experience teaching and mentoring students from underrepresented groups are also highly desirable to add to the already rich ethnic and cultural setting within the department. This position is part of a cluster hire with a senior faculty search for a director of the Whitney R. Harris World Ecology Center.

Applicants must have a PhD degree in an appropriate discipline, relevant postdoctoral experience, a strong publication record, and a commitment to excellence in research and teaching. The application should include 1) a cover letter, 2) a Curriculum Vitae, 3) a 3 page description of current and planned research, 4) a 2 page statement to include teaching philosophy and interests, and experiences with and commitments to diversity, and 5) contact information for three references. The application materials should be combined into a single PDF file and uploaded online at www.umsl.jobs (job ID 31097). For additional information, contact the search committee chair, Dr. Aimee Dunlap, at Aimee.Dunlap@umsl.edu.  Review of applications will begin October 28, 2019 and continue until the position is filled.

The Department of Biology

The Department of Biology has active research groups in ecology, evolution, and behavior, as well as in cell and molecular biology. The department participates in a joint program in biochemistry and biotechnology with the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and some faculty have joint appointments with the Danforth Plant Science Center and the St. Louis Zoo.

The Department of Biology offers degree programs at the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral levels, with ~500 undergraduates and ~100 graduate students.  Undergraduate students choose between a BA or BS, and can design their degree along three tracks: Cell and Molecular Biology, Evolution and Conservation Biology, and Pre-professional/Health Sciences.  The department offers undergraduate and graduate certificates in Biotechnology, Conservation Biology, Environmental Studies, and Neuroscience.  Students can also earn BS and MS degrees in Biochemistry & Biotechnology, which is a joint degree program between Biology and Chemistry.

The Biology Department is home to the Whitney R. Harris World Ecology Center, which promotes and supports research and education in biology and biodiversity conservation throughout the world.  The center participates in our outstanding graduate program in ecology, evolution, systematics, and conservation that attracts top scholars from all over the world. Funded by endowments, the Center offers graduate student fellowships, research grant competitions, community events, and opportunities for involvement in community outreach programs. The Harris Center has formal partnerships with the Missouri Botanical Garden and the Saint Louis Zoo.
