SENIOR SCIENTIST

MOLECULAR TARGETS PROGRAM

The Center for Cancer Research (CCR), National Cancer Institute (NCI), seeks a Senior Scientist to serve as the Program Director for its Molecular Targets Program based at NCI-Frederick.  NCI at Frederick facilities, which include a 68-acre campus at Fort Detrick, are home to approximately a third of the principal investigators from NCI’s Center for Cancer Research, along with staff from several NIH divisions, including the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics and the Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis.

The CCR is the largest division of the NCI intramural research program and comprises nearly 250 basic and clinical research groups located on two campuses outside of Washington DC. It is home to an extraordinary group of scientists and clinicians performing cutting-edge research on cancer and other viral targets.  Our scientists work on a broad spectrum of important, challenging and neglected biological and biomedical problems ranging from visualizing and understanding the structure of individual genes and proteins, elucidation of the mechanistic basis of cancer, developing novel methods for drug discovery, to inventing biomedical devices and technology and creating innovative ways to treat patients in the NIH Clinical Center (https://ccr.cancer.gov/about).

The Molecular Targets Program (MTP) provides expertise for the translation of basic science discoveries, made in the CCR, into screening assays and high-throughput screens to identify bioprobes and lead compounds that modulate targets, pathways, and cellular phenotypes relevant to cancer. The MTP performs multidisciplinary research combining chemistry, biology, pharmacology, screening technologies, and informatics to search pure compound and natural product extract libraries for bioactive small molecules, peptides, and proteins.  MTP researchers are highly collaborative and practice a team-oriented approach to discovery (https://ccr.cancer.gov/Molecular-Targets-Program).

Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent in pharmacognosy, pharmacology, chemistry, biochemistry, natural products chemistry, or a related discipline. Expertise in screening assay development, the preparation and characterization of natural products, high-throughput screening of pure compound and natural product extracts, and the isolation and characterization of bioactive molecules is required. Experience in the preclinical and clinical development of natural products and biopharmaceuticals is highly desired. Salary will be commensurate with experience. The successful applicant will have a strong record of original research, collaboration and publication in the area of drug discovery.  The candidate will also have excellent communication skills, ability to manage and mentor teams, a drive to collaborate, experience with managing multiple complex projects simultaneously, and should have supervisory and administrative experience.

 Interested applicants should submit:

▪ A letter of interest in the position including a career synopsis (maximum two (2) pages)

▪ A statement of research interests, future research plans and leadership and mentoring        philosophy (maximum three (3) pages)

▪ A current curriculum vitae and complete bibliography

Applications must be submitted electronically to: https://service.cancer.gov/ccr-careers.

Applications will be accepted during the period of September 10, 2019 – September 19, 2019 and the position will close as of September 19, 2019.  Applications received after September 19, 2019 will not receive consideration.  For questions regarding the application process please contact hollidal@mail.nih.gov.
