The Department of Biological Sciences at Union College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor to begin in September 2020. A Ph.D. in the Biological Sciences or a related field is required and postdoctoral research experience is strongly preferred. The successful candidate should have a broad research program in neurobiology, using physiological, genetic, behavioral and/or other approaches. Our goal is to hire an outstanding individual with a demonstrated commitment to teaching who can establish a successful and vibrant research program that incorporates undergraduates in a liberal arts setting. The successful candidate will teach introductory and upper level courses in the Neuroscience Program as well as introductory biology and/or sophomore level physiology. The Department of Biological Sciences at Union College is committed to teaching and mentoring students in the classroom and in our active research laboratories. Housed in the newly constructed Integrated Science and Engineering Complex, the Department is well equipped with NSF-funded instrumentation such as a microCT, a 3-D multicamera motion analysis system, Illumina DNA sequencer, scanning electron microscope, and substantial tissue culture and animal care facilities.
Union College is a small, highly selective liberal arts college with strengths in science and engineering in New York State's Capital Region, in the foothills of the Adirondacks, three hours from NYC and Boston. We emphasize close collaborations between faculty and students and have campus-wide initiatives promoting interdisciplinary activities. The Department of Biological Sciences contributes to numerous interdisciplinary programs including Neuroscience, Biochemistry, Environmental Science and Policy and Biomedical Engineering.
Union College is an equal opportunity employer and strongly committed to student and workforce diversity. Union provides a blend of intellectual, social and cultural opportunities to facilitate the integrated academic, social and personal development of a diverse community. We value and are committed to a host of diverse populations and cultures including, but not limited to, those based on race, religion, disability, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, national origin and veteran status. Increasing diversity on campus is a critical priority for Union, one that is integral to our mission of preparing students for a globally interconnected world. Our goal is not only to increase diversity, but to support an environment in which people from varied backgrounds can succeed and thrive. As such, we welcome applications from members of groups traditionally underrepresented in the field and we encourage applicants to comment in their cover letter on the ways in which their candidacy represents an increase in the diversity of the faculty or a commitment to the ideals of joining a community of diverse faculty, students, and staff.
We ask that candidates submit the following via our portal at http://jobs.union.edu: (1) an application letter, (2) a curriculum vitae, (3) statement of teaching interests and evidence of teaching effectiveness including any course and peer evaluations that are available, (4) statement of research interests and evidence of scholarship including copies of peer-reviewed publications, and (5) three letters of reference. Applicants should state in their cover letter how they will enhance the diversity of offerings and educational experiences if hired. We will begin reviewing applications starting October 15, 2019 and will continue until the position is filled. Please address all questions to the search committee, to bio-search@union.edu, 518-388-6409.
