The Jülich Centre for Neutron Science (JCNS) operates at the Heinz-Maier-Leibnitz-Zentrum (MLZ) in Garching near Munich a suite of high performance neutron scattering instruments. It provides access to these instruments for scientists from universities and research institutions in Germany and throughout the world. Within the user program more than 1000 scientists visit the MLZ every year to perform experiments in the physical, chemical, biological and materials sciences. In addition, JCNS is actively pursuing a research program in the field of soft matter science and condensed matter physics.

The Jülich Centre for Neutron Science (JCNS) operates neutron scattering instruments at the Heinz-Maier-Leibnitz-Zentrum (MLZ) in Garching near Munich. It provides access to these instruments for researchers from Germany and throughout the world. More than 1000 scientists visit the MLZ every year to perform experiments in the physical, chemical, biological and materials sciences. In-house research focuses on soft matter and magnetism. 


In the Scientific Computing Group of JCNS at MLZ we develop software for the analysis of scattering experiments. We support instrument users, and participate in exemplary data analyses. We closely cooperate with other European research centres.

We are looking to recruit a

Data Analysis Software Developer

Your Job:

  • develop open-source software to reduce, visualize, model, and fit experimental data
  • solve difficult numeric and algorithmic problems in data reduction and analysis
  • coordinate medium to large scientific software projects, including publications
  • take a leading role in exemplary studies from experiment through analysis to publication

Your Profile:

  • university degree with subsequent PhD in physics or related fields
  • broad extensive and verifiable experience in scientific software development is an absolute must
  • outstanding publication record
  • expert knowledge of C++ under Unix/Linux
  • experience with Python, Qt, CMake, git, Github or Gitlab, continuous integration, cross-platform development, numerical mathematics
  • experience with any of the following is a plus: Bayesian analysis, machine learning, physical simulation, condensed-matter physics, scattering, spectroscopy, crystallography
