The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) College of Medicine in Charleston, South Carolina, seeks a collaborative and accomplished academic leader to serve as its next chair for the Department of Microbiology and Immunology.  This is an outstanding opportunity to build on the strong reputation of the department, faculty, students and research program while shaping the vision and strategic direction of the department for the future.

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is one of 25 basic science and clinical departments within the MUSC College of Medicine.  The department works to understand and eliminate disease-causing microbes; and elucidate mechanisms and harness the power of the host immune system to fight against infections, cancer, and other diseases.  Faculty and staff concentrate on cancer immunology; immunogenetics; innate immunity; inflammation; autoimmunity; microbiology; and transplant immunology.  The next chair will be tasked with leading the expansion of the research profile for the department in a manner which aligns with the College of Medicine and MUSC's strengths, which will include making strategic hires, supporting faculty, continuing to develop junior faculty, and encouraging interdisciplinary collaborations.

MUSC, the state's only integrated, academic health science center, consists of six colleges and educates and trains more than 3,000 students and 750 residents.  The state’s leader in obtaining biomedical research funds, MUSC brought in more than $276 million in FY2018 and is home to the NCI-designated Hollings Cancer Center and a CTSA award.  MUSC Health, the clinical health system of MUSC, is comprised of some 1,600 beds, more than 100 outreach sites, and nearly 275 telehealth locations.  MUSC Health owns and operates eight hospitals situated in Charleston, Chester, Florence, Lancaster, and Marion counties.

The successful candidate will hold a M.D., Ph.D., or M.D./Ph.D in a relevant field, and be recognized as a world-class scientist with a strong history of extramural funding and an established record of excellence in teaching and research in an area that complements departmental and/or institutional strengths.  Candidates should have demonstrated effective leadership, management and communication skills, and possess a strong record of collaboration.  It is expected that the incoming chair will have academic accomplishments that merit appointment at the rank of full professor with tenure.

Confidential inquiries, nominations, and expressions of interest should be submitted via email to the MUSC's search consultants, Joyce De Leo, Ph.D. and Lyndsey Nicodem at MUSC_ChairMI@wittkieffer.com, or by phone at 630-575-6177.

The Medical University of South Carolina values diversity and is committed to equal opportunity for all persons regardless of age, color, disability, ethnicity, marital status, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, veteran status or any other status protected by law.
