Pediatric Infectious Disease, Faculty Position

The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is soliciting candidates for an Endowed Chair in Pediatric Infectious Diseases. The candidate should have experience in Virology, and a minimum of 10 years of postgraduate experience. In addition, the candidate should have documented success in obtaining and maintaining extramural support, including grants from the National Institutes of Health. The research laboratory of this individual will be located in dedicated space amongst other clinical virologists at the institution. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to recruit additional faculty over time who will be expected to compete for, if not already have, independent extramural support. The focus of the laboratory research can be on either RNA or DNA viruses.

The selected candidate also will have the opportunity to direct the Molecular Diagnostic Virology

Laboratory, which is located on the Children’s of Alabama campus adjacent to the research labs. This established and highly successful clinical laboratory provides an additional opportunity for research in the pathogenesis of human viral infections, translating clinical events from the hospital to basic science observations.

The Division of Infectious Diseases has a longstanding, internationally renowned record in the study of herpesvirus Infections, including the molecular biology, diagnosis, epidemiology, and treatment. Additional research conducted by division scientists include the development and evaluation of genetically engineered herpes simplex virus for the treatment of brain tumors, and a robust drug discovery program in partnership with Southern Research. There are nine physician‐researchers and three PhDs in the Division, who receive nearly $16 million annually in federal funding. The division leads four national and international networks of clinical collaborators on the bench‐to‐bedside‐to‐bench research conducted by its faculty members.

The ideal candidate will qualify for an appointment at the Associate or Professor level within UAB and will be an MD, or MD/PhD who is licensed or eligible for a medical license in the state of Alabama. Salary and tenure status are negotiable based on experience and current academic achievements.

The UAB Department of Pediatrics has nationally recognized expertise and firmly established multidisciplinary programs. This position will provide opportunities for growth of divisional programs, as well as opportunities for collaborations with other distinguished programs within UAB.
